RE: Chris Harris video: Toyota GT 86
Discussion
Great video, and not just because you confirm that the car is all those who have been waiting for it hoped it would be. I love the way some comment about TTs and interiors is drowned out by a great squealing slide! I think this is a game changer, and I hope it points to a way that we can still have fun as the power race is brought to a close by CO2 emissions limits.
I can't think of any car I've wanted as much as this. I can't think of any car more suited to my needs, more sensible or more fit for purpose. I don't know what its 0-60 time is, what it's 50-70mph time is or how well it'll stop from 100mph. I don't care that on my tedious commute home I'll be overtaken by sweaty reps in German diesels and nor do I care that it'll no doubt soon be the card nobody wants in a deck of Top Trumps.
I care that I can actually get a sense of balance just from watching a video of it in motion. I care that it was designed purely for fun and that it'll be relatively cheap to run. I care that it'll remain largely anonymous in the company car park. I care that I won't be pressured into driving fast or trying to compete on public roads because of my incredibly undersized genitals.
I've never bought a car before without test-driving one as I believe that to be fundamentally insane. I drove four different Elises on seven separate occasions before getting my first Elise, I drove the 340R twice before handing over money for it and I had a Fireblade for 24 hours before chucking a deposit on that. I'm picky, fussy and probably quite annoying when it comes to actually spending money but this weekend I'm going to be a complete cretin and actually dump a deposit on one of these. I'm that confident I won't be disappointed.

So a buyer has £25000 burning a hole in their pocket and has to decide whether to go for a new GT86 or a 6 month old Nissan 370Z GT with under 1000 miles on the clock....hmmmmm.
I'm sure the Toyota is good, but £25000+ lol.
Wasn't the price originally supposed to be around £20k.
Ah excellent. I thought the thread was looking a bit weird without the "but I could buy a [insert chosen alternative for about £25k here] and it'd be much better" comment.I'm sure the Toyota is good, but £25000+ lol.
Wasn't the price originally supposed to be around £20k.
All's well with the world.

Well, Mr Harris, this question does seem to come up a lot, how does it drive compared to the big Nissan?otolith said:

A better question is, isn't the RX-8 pretty much all this and more? Of course without the press. Is this really more fun than a RX-8? Maybe it is? Indeed the two are the closet in memory. Others to compare are the 968cs and M3mk1 would make for a very INTERESTING comparison. j

I did not state which i thought was the better car (i even stated "I'm sure the Toyota is good") I merely pointed out that in my opinion £25000+ was poor value for money.
By all means keep defending the Toyota, at that price I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

Your way of justifying 'poor value for money' was by comparing it to a pre-owned car. Therefore totally useless. I did not state which i thought was the better car (i even stated "I'm sure the Toyota is good") I merely pointed out that in my opinion £25000+ was poor value for money.
By all means keep defending the Toyota, at that price I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

I don't disagree btw. As good as I'm sure it is, £25k goes a long way in our classifieds, if not for me towards a Nissan.

The bit about having 20 minutes wasn't just a conceit - and they hardly got any extra time at all in the car. That explains any sound issues - simply no time at all to go back and redo anything afterwards.
what Stuart said.CH is gushing over the Toyabaru and talking of going back to basics, but hasn't he forgotten about RX8?!!...
I've watched the build up on the GT86 a bit from afar, wondering what the fuss might be about, but now I'm starting to get it. And to see a journalist so excited and keen to pass it on that it looks like 'a bit of wee is coming out' mid-review, well that's probably why he seems to be settling in well isn't it?

Good that chris found out about a proper LSD option, that should make it even more fun. I wonder what diff unit it has under there, R200 maybe?
Apologies if I've misunderstood, but a Torsen diff is mechanical? What was the extra option they were talking about - a plate diff? Welded? Edited by bicycleshorts on Wednesday 8th February 23:11
