This is a phrase I see all over PH, always reminds me of Quentin Wilson telling us at some point in the nineties about the lunacy of buuying a new Mondeo when for the same thirteen or so grand you could get a Bentley Turbo R, I wonder how many hapless berks went out and took Nosferatu's advice and had a tidy Bentley on the drive where the Ford should have stood only to be confronted six months later by another invoice for about the same amount to service, MOT and keep it running ?

So, I think this phrase should be always deployed with a Caveat of "But Put aside for emergencies".

So, current thread on the Maserati had me drooling, "You can pick one up for" 16k,

"But Put aside for emergencies" ?

How much, would four grand cover it ?

Please quote your car, its price and it's "But Put aside for emergencies" suggested figure ?

Possibly needs a "And allow x pounds per year" as well.

You can pick up a good bit of French coolness for under £10k.

Wouldn't even like to guess how much it would cost when things go pop & bang. hehe

i agree, if you cant buy the bits from GSF, or euro, then its classed as exotic and a third needs to be put aside.

Nice, I do like a bit of S and M.

Reminds me a little of the lady that bought a sound MGB of a Pistonheader that then had some issues (that she was told about) and it was going to cost money so she was hassling him, basically if you are buying something old, rare or complicated and you cant do most work yourself it weill get expensive.

Something like that SM versus a new car at the same money is like comparing a snarling Pit Bull to a Sony Aibo electronic dog, not in terms of driving, but compared to what it would do to your wallet, people who look at a classic like that and say "Oh, what fun, I might get one, I imagine I will cut a dash in it", unless wealthy are just asking for a financial ruination, even hardened Petrolheads would have to think long and hard about stuff like that and do their research.

That all said, sometimes the clueless do seem to get away with it.
