Sounds similar to my requirements....

Do you do a lot of miles / motorways?

No garage queen and certainly no show winner, but it goes ok, looks ok and is very, very, very brown inside. Brown plastics, brown carpet and brown velour. All different shades, obv.

Remarkably good fun to punt around.
Looks nice. And brown is good.

Spoiler really is awful but they do come in a couple of really nice colours.

Not a lot of miles. In the past few years I've averaged 6-7k a year. I do quite a lot of town driving and some long motorway trips up the M1. I have an on again/off again lust for a VXR8 but I've already owned a Monaro and I've not really owned a proper "sports car" yet so the Z4 would seem like a good option. I'd like a Cayman but they're a bit out of my budget.

ETA: I do still love these: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3767973.htm but I'm actually a bit too big to fit in one comfortably.

Excellent engine, good looking car. And they seem to be pretty good value. Surprisingly practical as well.

Not aware that they made any mechanical alterations of note, which leaves you with:

Uglier wheels.
Uglier rear spoiler.
Uglier front spoiler/splitters.
Uglier Aluminium Cube interior trim.

Although Carbon Black is great, but Estoril looks st on anything but a BMW with an S50 under the bonnet.

Oki doke thanks for that, I quite like the styling alterations other than the SPOILer.

Will stick to looking at regular Sports then.

RE clubsports, I think they had a shorter final drive ratio, and were a few kilos lighter

I'm about to set off. With any luck, I'll see some of you at MB World approx 10:00 tomorrow morning.

Small matter of 1000 miles and 17hrs driving to negotiate first though...

Ferry, yes the Mitsubishi Carisma (for it is that car from which the S/V40 were derived) engine.

Of the various 1.8s, one is over 1,800cc (1,840 iirc), that's the GDi.

The 1,796cc is borkless. Shared with the contemporary Laguna MkI I think it was.

The 2.0t would be my pick of the bunch, with either gearbox. I haven't come across a T4 that hasn't led a very hard life, the extra power is too much for that chassis, the ~160 ponies of the one rung lower works well and seems to get totally overlooked by most in contrast.

It's better on fuel than the 2.0 NA too.
Thanks Len, and Chris. Given the few miles I'd be doing in it, fuel consumption isn't a primary consideration. Insurance on the t is a wee bit more.......

Food for thought....

I've driven one. I really enjoyed it and it was a good thing to cover ground in, but it was 2 years old so had no bork. Can't compare it to the regular sport, but I prefer the CS styling and really like Estoril boxedin

I'm aware of the runflat issues, I assume it's no problem to swap to normal tyres and keep a can or two of tyre goop in the boot and a decent breakdown service subscription. I fancy something low and quick but with decent practicality and non-scary running costs. Seems to fit the bill nicely.

ETA: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3746044.htm

Slightly unusual interior combo but I quite like it.
108s will either have been reconditioned or will need it

Other than that the only real issue is the HVA problem and thats subjective, it will just tap when cold.

The American ZHP pack had a shorter final drive ratio (I know that for sure) and the Clubsport pack seems very very similar to the ZHP pack so I wouldn't be suprised if it shared the shorter final drive.

However, looking at the stats of the car it appears to have identical acceleration to the standard 330ci so I'm probably wrong.

Were there problems with those wheels then? I'll listen out for tappy noises on cold start but if it's only a nuisance then I dont really mind.
