Why oh why do you constantly see "I'd never pay that for X", do people not realise how expensive cars have become?
Gone are the days of £15k buying you a decent hatch and £18-20k getting you the hotter model etc.

I know it's a st rant, but it's stupid to see the same comments spat out over and over again.

New cars are expensive. There.

I paid £9K for my Fiesta 4 years ago.

The equivalent model now is about £13K wobble

Yes, my wife was on about the new Kia Sorrento earlier labouring under the illusion that because it was a Kia it would be dirt cheap.

They start at 24k and go up to 34k and can presumably be specced beyond that.

The price of new cars is "expensive", considering that, the price of 2nd hand cars is amazing.

I've had new company cars, many of them, but unless I won the lottery, I'd never buy one myself.

Given that I only posted in the Polo R discussion about 30 minutes ago, about how laughably overpriced it was then I guess I am one of these people. And just as you're standing by your comment, I'll stand by my comment.

It is laughably overpriced.

I quite agree, but I think there is the odd exception that's too much. I struggle to see nigh on £100k for a moderately-specced 991 Carrera S as good value, for example. £30k for a Golf GTI is fair game, though.

not that long ago a family four door saloon would cost you 13,000 now you need 20,000 +
if you brought a vw golf by the time you add a few bits on you've done over 23,000

Saw an 05 Hyundai Sonata go through auction today at £2550. It had 31k and was immaculate with all options.

OK, its a st car, bought by people who don't care about cars.

People like my uncle perhaps, who is about to pay £17k on a Focus to do 5k per year.

The Focus does 45mpg compared to the Hyundai 32mpg though.

£2550! Nearly pulled the trigger myself.

What kind of production volumes has VW targeted?

The list price of an Escort LX TD in 1995 (17 years ago!) was the best part of 15K. Prices gone up less than you think. Not that I paid that, thank god. Worst car I've ever owned.

Nail meet head.

The reason prices are rising is because a lot more people can afford them through finance. What's the difference between a £20k and a £25k nowadays? £50 a month?

Chinese scooters are rubbish, but South Korea, Taiwan, Italy and Japan make some cracking ones. I'm on 80mpg commuting with my SYM - and it was < £3k all in smile

In today's money that's £23.4k. If anything you get better cars for your money than ever.

At the bottom end of the market you can get a brand new Panda for the first year depreciation of a top of the range golf.

Now in my book a golf isn't hugely different to a panda

Then look at the price of a caterham and compare it to a top of the range golf and tell me a golf is good value for money as a performance car
