For 40 grand you could get
1 A slab of brand new VAG excitement such as a hot golf or an Audi S1
2 A lump of brand new diesel dullness from the king of RWD and fake engine noises BMW
3 Or you could be odd and buy a brand new panda
with change for a wee brand new toy
4 or you could take a brave pill and buy a secondhand supercar
Editted to add if you are going for the supercar it has to be about 10 years old and a proper supercar not a footballer mobile
So where would you put your 40grand assuming it was your only car/cars

To have £40k to spend on a car I'd guess a mortgage would already be paid off?
With that in mind i'd probably say Nissan GTR.

Btw this thread comes up every week and you will get people talking about mortgages

Depends on how big the mortgage is ?
You easily get a used Panda 100 and R300 and still take a fair chunk out of your mortgage. But assuming you didn't care about the mortgage used super car for me, ta.
Or a daily and a classic, like a 70s AM.
Or my current favourite, a 70s Corniche.
Or a convertible Defender 110.
TBH it's probably a good thing I don't have £40k burning a hole in my pocket
entirely depends on circumstances.
£40k on a VW? are you mad?
If you've always wanted the Ferrari then it's a itch you might need to scratch and you could keep it a year then sell on without too much of a loss. I've scratched that one and don't need to do it again with a Lotus. I still have it so don't need to.
I would put £20 ish towards the mortgage and use the rest on a decent car to get me to work, maybe a new Fiat/Alfa small car, plus something fun for the weekend/track, maybe an Elise with a few miles on.

And don't contemplate an AMV8 - one of the worst cars I've ever owned

Why? If I had 40k in the bank and 40k left on my mortgage, I'd have an Aston Martin in the garage...... In fact it's a constant discussion I have with a friend who has more than enough money to have a DB9 Volante and lots left over in the bank, I can't understand why he doesn't buy one!

Second hand Supercar.
You only live once. If you're in a position to buy one now, I'd probably take it.
Will it be as easy to own something like that in the future as it is now, or will they be taxed out of existence? Will you be in the same financial position to do it? You could always sell it if you get into trouble or need to clear the mortgage.
Tin foil hats at the ready.
