your mental

you could have a brand new kia optima and a brand new caterham 7 for your 40 grand
Although I would do pretty much anything not to spend £40k of my own money on a Golf, when on earth is he supposed to use the 7?
i could keep it in the kitchen i guess

might piss the OH off

if i had the money and a garage / drive / second parking space the new RS4 (first) and charged atom would be ideal, not going to happen thou frown

40 k would get me a new or 2nd hand Audi S4, then a trip to MTM for a tune up for 430 bhp.

I can't see why someone would choose a golf over this.

I'd buy a more expensive version of what I've got now.
Large comfy 4x4 for dog carrying and 6k miles a year of general trundling about and a good bike. The ZZR1400 is currently calling, I'd like a 200bhp motorbike before they get banned!

I didn't even know it was possible to spend £40K on a Golf.

for 40,000 something along that sort of line i'd be looking at not really going to go down in value specail to drive i would not spend 40,000 on a golf that is going to be worth a 3rd of that in 3 years and in the skeem of things is not that great compared to alot of other cars

Or an early 997. Or a mint 996 turbo and a few years' running costs.

Or, worst case, a 3 year old golf and ten trackdays a year in a hired R300.

Or a £10k whatever and a competitive go at the Caterham Academy. With change.

If I was putting £40k into something, strong residuals would be the most important factor. For that reason F355 going from the choices on the front page. That or £40k on the mortgage. It's a lot of money to spend on a depreciating asset.

I'd go for the 'Seven and a snotter' option.

Sevens costs peanuts to run and yet, at vaguely legal speeds, a mid-range example will be able to keep up with the baby supercars you're talking about.

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Aston Martin fan and I don't think any petrolhead would complain about having a Ferrari in the garage, but the running costs for a £10-15k Caterham are a pretty negligible portion of the purchase price (...most of which you'll hopefully get back when you come to sell it); a Ferrari or Aston that may once have sold for a six-figure sum could leave a much bigger dent.

I'd say have your cake and eat it. Get a supercar-sized grin from hooning around in a Seven at the weekends for a few years, smug in the knowledge that you'll get most of the money back to put towards grown up stuff if you ever need to.

That said, what about an NSX? Don't have any personal experience, but if this month's Evo is to be believed it's an iconic junior supercar that can be run for the price of a hot hatch. Sounds tempting...

And you will be having so much fun choosing which car to drive that you won't have time for a supercar. Besides, the car in the photo is only a posh FIAT anyway and the maintenance on that will be double all the others put together. Steer clear.
