OP - looks like the majority of the posters don't realise what a great car the XS is.

Don't worry, once they find out Chris Harris has one all the sycophants will be wondering how the M5 managed to beat you smile

I'd say the op has made a big mistake of a silly post. However, like others have said, the 205 xs is a great little car, id hazard that round bends and what have you, it would be more competition, still lose, but ultimately stand a better chance.

Do think its rather funny to see people crying out that the op is childish then come back with the quite harsh stupid posts in reply. "EURO st BOX" "fk YOU JUST CUS YOU CANT AFFORD ONE!!!!!" "IF ONLY YOU HAD A GOATEE LIKE ME!!!" and the like. Jus' sayin'

This should be titled, "Expected Losses".

3 seconds is a long time in a drag race.

His car was nicer, faster, and sounded better. Well done you!

you could have won with a couple of little tweaks

a Nurburgring sticker would add 30+bhp straight out of the can

A while ago I had a traffic light Grand Prix with an 07-plate BMW M5. I was in a '91 Peugeot 205 1.4 XS.

Considering there was a £30k difference between the value of our cars, I was pleasantly suprised to find that he got to the next set of lights, about 300 metres away, just 3 seconds before me. The look on his face in his side mirror was a picture. Was his marginal extra performance really worth £30k more?

So it got me thinking, has anyone else suprised much more supposedly 'powerful' machinery around town?

Using this meme more and more on PH of late.

Absolutely worth it.

As for 'just' three seconds, are you joking ? If there wasn't a set of lights 300m away, you wouldn't even know which way he went.

As for the look on his face, it might have something to do with the level of noise you made with a 1.4 engine trying to keep up with an M5, who probably didn't realise he was in a race.

Racing on the public roads is an automatic ban. I have no doubt your 1.4 would beat my MX5, Cavalier and Accord, unless it was on a) Fun, b) Size of boot c) Torque vs MPG

If both cars were flat out, the M5 would be about five seconds ahead by 60mph.

This must have been a very slow race indeed!

Mrs Pints just read the OP.

Hat's off chap. Three seconds is a month in drag racing terms but in a 0-speed limit-0 event you did well. On a "B" road you would have had him (in the bends). hehe

My MGB GT used to upset quite a few people. The didn't expect it to have a S13 200SX engine and gear box. wink

I'm sure the 205 XS is a really fun little car, but suggesting it's only marginally slower than a 500bhp BMW M5 and that the difference is justified because of a large price differential is laughable. I don't think the argument about it potentially being a badged-adorned M Sport stands either... a 520d would also hand out punishment to the little Peugeot.

Is a Veyron any less impressive because it costs loads of money? Of course not.

Maybe putting the back seats down gave him an unfair advantage?

You can't put the back seats down in an M5.
