Yep, a what car thread, sorry!

My old man is after a 2nd car, he currently does about 700 miles a week, currently in an L322 4.4 Range Rover. The idea of the second car is to bring the mileage back to normal a bit on the Range Rover, as he's lashed 50-odd thousand on it over the last 20 months. Budget is around £8-9k, and he's been looking specifically at 2.7 TDVi Jaguar XJ's. With the mileage, automatic is preferred, as he used to get a bad hip in the manual Vectra he had before he got his Range Rover.

So, he can't see any that he likes massively at the moment, and he's started looking at A3 1.9 TDI's. He's attracted by the 60mpg figure, but my cynical mind says he won't regularly see more than 47-50 in the real world, plus a lot are manuals.

So, what else in the same ballpark is worth a look? I suggested 730d / 530d but he's not overly keen on them, and I suggested A6's last night.

Requirements:

Diesel
Auto
< 100,000 miles
< £9k
Comfortable for long distance driving.

Not sure if it makes financial sense to run two cars at the same time to achieve a slight mileage reduction on another car, but I'm sure you'll go over the running costs of two cars versus one etc.

Suggestions;

Citroen C6 - same engine as the Jag, very comfy, liable to depreciate further still.

Passat on small wheels with some sort of TDi (1.9 boat anchor is meant to get near to the official figures and last forever).

Rover 75 CDTi - very comfy, cheap to buy, same engine as BMW 320d so should have good poke:fuel economy.

See I really like the look of the Citroen C6, I might check those out.

The Range Rover's bought and paid for, as this car will be, so there's no finance costs, and insurance is pretty neglible as he's got 15 years NCB, a clean licence and may as well live in a field as far as insurance companies are concerned lol. He loves the Range Rover, and it's invaluable in the winter as he's about 6 miles off the nearest B road on a farm, plus he's spending about £1,100 a month of fuel currently, so it'll make financial sense pretty quick, if it was a requirement.
