Diesel: Worth it? (Yes, it's another what car thread)

Looking into replacing my Subaru Legacy (2.5 N/A GX) with something a little more comfortable on long distance drives, and hopefully with a bigger range. I do around 3-400 miles a week, plus at least one 700 mile round trip from Cornwall-Shropshire a month.
So far the list of choices are:
BMW E39
Mercedes W124
Vauxhall Omega (facelift)
Whilst I'd prefer an estate, I'd be open to a saloon at the right price provided a towbar is fitted. Also would much prefer an automatic to a manual. Question is, is it worth looking for a diesel? I've a budget of up to a grand (ok, I know we're in shed territory here), but with the price difference between petrol and diesel I'm not sure it's worth buying a diesel.
