If the stripped one came in about £20k I'd be in. Prefer the looks of the brz to the gt86 too

Later on in the year, however, it will be joined by a 'lower-spec' model. Best of all, there'll be a third 'stripped-out' version
This concerns me, why can't the 'lower-spec' model and the 'stripped-out' model be the same thing?

Hope they don't do a Porsche and charge you more for less.

Good decision Subaru. It just needs to be a small cost save.

If the top spec model is £26K I would expect the lower spec car to be around £24 to £24.k and the really stripped out car to be around £22.5k depending on the level of equipment offered.

Fantastic news, a brilliant idea that will undoubtedly create a competetively priced aftermarket for mods. The only slight downside is that the looks aren't a bit more individual. E.g. Surely clear light casings aren't cool any more? And I say that as the owner of two cars with them on! The trendsetter - my IS200 looks great. On my mazda 6 they look positively crud.

And I hate being sceptical but there is not a chance that a stripped out BRZ will cost £16k. If it's under £20k I will be astonished.

To finish on a plus note... Boxer engine = :-D

16k? Seriously? A lie! I bet by the time it here it'll be 21k.

Trust me. The PR always goes up in reality!
Pretty sure the 16k figure never came from Subaru in the first place, I think some journalist was desparate for a headline and just converted the Jap market price into pounds. So of course it isn't going to be that cheap.

Finally one manufacturer who don't charge more for less.
Lightweight versions of cars, especially supercars, usually employ expensive lightweight materials such as carbon fibre, so it's no surprise there often more.

yes

Exactly, the stripped out car may only be 16k in Japan, but the top spec car is only £22,250 there. 16k in the UK my arse, dream on.

Doubt it will be 16k, more in the region of 21-24 thousand pounds. But I hope it all works out for Subaru.

We've seen the full pricing for the Japanese GT-86, on which everything else is based.

The "customise grade" is 1,990,000 Yen which at today's exchange rate is £15774.87
The "G" model is 2,410,000 Yen
The "GT" model is 2,790,000 Yen, which at today's exchange rate is £22,116.53

Of these, we know that the "GT" model will retail in the UK for £24,995. 2790000/24995 = 111.6 yen to the pound (which is different to the actual exchange rate, but we'll use it here). It works out a bit more than Pistonheads did it (at £17831).

Being as pessimistic as possible, and adding the biggest possible price difference between the two prices (£24,995 - 22116.53) to the base price in yen gives us a "worst case" figure of £18,653.34.

Considering that £18,650 would be working on the assumption that the duty and VAT is the same (which it isn't) I think we'll be there or thereabouts, even for the Subaru version.

My girlfriend asked about all of this before ordering her Toyota, the Subaru base spec will come in just under £20k.

Hello fellow Singaporite wavey

If it's less than £20k, I would seriosuly consider getting a new car for the first time when I get back to the UK yes

The Japanese are really catering for petrolhead tastes, be it my love bikes or cars. Seems some German manufacturers have gone too far the other way in providing a techno showcase, which according to some is uninvolving....they but aren't giving enough back to basics machines, certainly at a sensible price level anyway.

I wholeheartedly approve. I predict other Japanese manufacturers to follow suit and we'll see some real competition in the (new?) small RWD coupe sector. I think it's time it was praised and recognised...

Even the cheapo GT86 would be £20k plus here. Britain is the land where manufacturers get the cream and we get ripped off. Subaru have mooted their version will be dearer (why?), so get saving.

If you all didn't say "yes please" to nearly every exciting-ish car that gets announced, we might get some down to earth prices for once.
