Great stuff, looking forward to seeing what the Ducati can do. Having found it hairy enough in a car, it's not something I'd relish doing on the bike.

Not quite, I work at Rent4Ring.de as a dogsbody and we run a fleet of Suzuki Swift Sports. Nice thought though! wink
And bloody good fun they are too. When my Impreza wasn't ready in time for a trip last year I took one out for a couple of evening sessions and had a great time.

Is the rider's first name Andy by any chance?
Or Brendan...
Met a guy at the ring one time by the the name of Andy who would just fly around the place. These sorts of times. Thats why i'm wondering.
ISTR the 7:26 lap was one of Brendan's? What happened to him? I know he lost his wife, and had more than his share of helicopter rides, but what's he doing now? I met him a few times, I used to think that his sense of self-preservation was slightly out of kilter!

He's doing alright. He had another helicopter ride last October but is now healed and actually back in the UK for a few months, then back over here for when the season starts again.

For me, an unplanned ride in a helicopter would be my cue to slow down and really not worry how fast I can get round a bit of German tarmac, it really doesnt matter. I get the impression that when there is a stopwatch is involved the fun seems to go out of driving/riding and it all gets too serious.

So, meh to this video, not impressed, dont want to encourage people to kill themseleves in the name of posting a fast time, getting the record or whatever, his testicles will be average sized and it isnt brave, its mental and gives me the same feeling as when I watch TT footage.

The ring gets to much focus anyway and this just goes and encourages more berks to go and kill or maim themselves, or at the very least destroy their P and J, not saying it should be banned, its great but we need to not take it so seriously as this is what is going to get it closed down.

Go quickly, have fun but leave the stopwatch at home !

All I know is - if you didn't find yourself leaning into the turns you must be super glued to your chair!

Wow. At least it confirms what I always knew - I'm a really shonky rider!!

I'm sure I'll p*** on somebody's chips here, but what will a comparison of bike vs car on the nurburgring actually prove? I'm a confirmed bike nut, but even I'll admit the only similarity between a car and a bike is that they both (mainly) use an internal combustion engine and have wheels, - there will be tracks where a bike will utterly trounce a car, and others where the opposite would be true... I'm sure there's a track out there where even the most committed biker would have a significant fight on his hands against any mid-range hot-hatch, but it'd also be true that for less than a tenth of the price of a veyron supersports I could build a bike that'd blow it into the weeds....

Or is it just going back to the question of whether the ring is the be-all-and-end-all of performance testing for cars or bikes? Makes for fantastic print, and it is a lovely track, but, relevant?...

the ring's mainly corners, with one huuuuuge straight - there's no point going for maximum outright speed because you'd get no drive through the corners, and acceleration between corners would be rubbish..... one of the benefits for bikes in the car vs bike thing is that we can "just" change our drive to wheel sprocket ratios for either top speed or maximum acceleration/torque and anything in between...
Ayup. I've wondered why more people don't do that, to drop the top speed (which is "likely" to not be used that often, other than on track). Didn't it used to be a relatively common mod on Bandits and the like? They're never going to worry the top end so why not make them punchier through the gears? I guess it's always going to be top end numbers that sell a vehicle, at the expense of better fun throughout a smaller speed range...

Isn't 7:26 the lap time the Zonda R managed - good grief he was motoring. How much quicker would that have been on a clear track!!!!

I watch vids like this and the TT, and it truly makes you realise there are some nutters out there. Balls of steel to do that. Only car racing that comes close is the likes of non circuit WRC etc for having large kahooners! Brave man.

I was pondering that, possibly ten or so seconds.

Not sure about the whole cars vs bikes thing, nobody has to take sides, they are all motorised transport, just one has half the number of wheels, blokes do this all the time, was the Spectrum vs the C64 when I was a kid.

Spectrum, obviously.

From rubber keyed micro unit to the uber cool +3 with floppy drive. It was the clear winner.

I never like getting into the car bike debate. I love both
All I will say though is when you watch this and watch the Radical...both are at the top of there game. Serious skills. i personnelly would like to have a quarter of there ability.
To decide which is faster you'll probably need to get an F1 againsts a moto GP bike.
That should answer the question once and for all.

Who's the bravest........the biker!

Good article, cracking vid & can't wait for the Panigale results.

According to Neil Hodgson, the 1199 is as good as his 996RS race bike of a few years ago, so I think it'll be an impressive time. It has a lot of rider aids that the bike in the vid didn't which would all make it significantly quicker.

I'd be really shocked if it was 'as it left the showroom'.
