Might be too old for you, but how about a Britannia:

Ticks most of the boxes, and should be within a haggle of the budget.

Bristol/MPG? hmmm...

Anyhow mpg is for losers, buy a cheap run-a-round for a grand then go mad and buy whatever your heart desires

He meant 'special' as in 'makes you feel good'

not 'special' as in 'needs'.
Driven one? They're quality cheap fun [biased]. Nothing else is as fun (that I've driven) which is (well) under £20k new, FWD, can seat 4

335i obviously - ticks all the boxes and more.

Everything else doesn't meet all of your criteria...

Meets all of the technical criteria I agree.

Not special though, at least in my opinion.

You shouldn't dismiss the XK because it's auto. I was a diehard manual man until I got one. The 6 speed ZF in these is rather good although occasionally I do miss a 3rd pedal. I'm managing 25mpg in my, admittedly boring commute, in an XKR. IMO it's the only looker that's been suggested so far.

I've done my best to keep to the list of prioroties, but there were some very nice cars out there! Though one is over budget and the rest probably wont hit the 25mpg!:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

1. E55 AMG - 17,000 miles - £19,950. High spec, nice colour combo, the MPG will be likely be crap. But its a low mileage AMG merc for under £20k!

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

2. M5 V10 - 27,500 miles - £22,000. Over budget but was the cheapest/ low mileage car imo.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

3. Passat R36 - 36,500 miles - £14,495. The cheapest of the cars and probably the rarest. Nice 300bhp engine biggrin

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

4. S4 Cabriolet - 15,500 miles - £16,000. Wasnt sure if you had considered a 4.2 V8 cabriolet. A nice looking car in my opinion.

5. 335i Coupe - 31,000 miles - £18,000. Wasnt sure if this is a car you would like. It's got a Heritage body kit doesnt look bad, and has been remapped to 370bhp (0-60 in 4.8 seconds...apparently).
Thats an expensive taxi fleetlaugh

With that budget, I'd think about a very tidy 335i.

I would happily spend 10K on a clio but if I'm going to push the boat out and spend up to 20K I'm looking for something a bit different. Although a manual box would be nice, the front runner is probably an XK at the moment. Beautiful V8 coupe thats worth the relatively poor MPG.

If you use the car every day, it will become the norm rather than special.
Depends on the car. My daily has clocked up 20k miles in 18 months and still retains most of its "specialness"

No point having something special and then leaving it the garage all bloody week while you drive around in some white-goods

E46 M3 CSL? I know it's not a manual but it definitely qualifies as special and at a pinch could be a daily...

Check video bellow at 3.20 or 3.50 and eat your own words. Now he can buy luxurious Raider and other edition. And he will not have to take risks with older cars(although old M3 CSL is very tempting off course):

A BMW 335i then remap it. Do a few more bits and you have a nice handling, very quick car that's very subtle. Add an LSD and really breathe on it and you can see nearly 500bhp - not a lot will keep up.

it'll still be a common looking euro box.

It's in his shortlist and three other people have suggested it too. Get a coupe or Touring and you have a pretty stylish car.

IMO nicer looking than a 996 which is possibly Porsche's lowest point in styling.
