it'll still be a common looking euro box.
(get the Porsche)
It's in his shortlist and three other people have suggested it too. Get a coupe or Touring and you have a pretty stylish car.

IMO nicer looking than a 996 which is possibly Porsche's lowest point in styling.
Umm....

You could find a well looked after manual DB7 coupe for your budget, but it'd be a 6cyl supercharged one... and rare.

If I had 20k to buy something 'special', itd be a noble. Not practical, but the little devil on my shoulder would probably win that argument.

996 C4S
SL55 (mine did 18-23mpg)
XKR
M5 05>

I don't see the 1/3 series/VWs/S3/TT etc being 'special'

BMW E63 6-series? The 630ci came in manual, but I'd plump for the 650ci - economical, 4.8L V8 with 2+2 seats and an enormous boot. The 650ci is well specced too - HUD as standard I believe.

I scratched that itch with a c55 AMG .Ran it for 30 months with a grateful nod to the Tier 1 warranty.

The same engine in my 4.8is was never economical so i must be missing something or driving too quickly!

They did a manual in the 650i but they are super rare, that sounds like a lovely combination.

I haven't driven either but as a 730d owner I'm always hearing how 750i drivers are getting within 5-6mpg of the diesel so they must be pretty economical for what they are - the X5 has a few 4x4 drivetrain and aerodynamic disadvantages that the 6's and 7's don't!

Its often derided as the slow one of the range but I wouldn't mind betting the 272bhp 630i manual is a very nice care indeed and is known for being a very economical engine for its size and power, and a low mileage well specced example is easily attainable for below the OP's budget.
