Drive them all and decide based on what feels best to you.

The cayman is absolutely incredible. That is all I can really say.

To be fair I have not driven the Merc but out of the Porsche and the BM I think the ZM is fair more responsive to drive and I am sure will hold it's price far better than the Porsche....! Just look at the Z3M Coupes now.! Not far off a Z4M Coupe.....! IMO a safer bet....!

What a great thread smile

One thing OP-isn't the AMG only available as an auto?

Would make a massive difference to me.

Interesting about the performance of the Z v's the cayman, mine feels every bit as quick as the cayman R I had so I figured it would be way quicker than an early 3.4 cayman S-maybe it is all subjective with the straight six rasp. Though pound for pound if the OP is considering a 2.7 cayman it's safe to assume the ZM will monster that (in a straight line).

AFAIK yes, 7 speed auto only - the EVO review of the 55 gives the auto box a bit of a slagging along with the electronic jiggery pokery..

It was the reason I got rid of my M3csl, & the reason I simply love my Z4MC, that engine will go down in history as one of the greats, & to have it connected to a great manual box in a package as attractive as the coupe is pure cloud9

I did love the caymanR mind you-but I could realisticly only stretch to the none dfi engined caymanS & there's just way too many problems with those engines-yet another thread in the Porsche forum last week-scored bores this time & that's a minimum 6 grand plus to sort out frown

The Z4MC has the same engine as the E46 M3 right?

Same as the e46 m3 csl without the carbon air box, though I've heard it said it has a more advanced ecu

Certainly they're all the same basic engine the glorious S54 3.2 straight six.

Glad you made this thread, I was going to ask the same question, albeit with a Boxster instead of a Cayman...

Driven an SLK55, and that engine is epic. With the roof down, the noise is intoxicating. The autobox isn't that bad, there's so much torque it really doesn't matter what gear you are in and it all adds up to the GT feel of the car. Interior is solid, but very plasticky and the roof is impressive.
As Clarkson said though, the whole car just revolves around that engine, all other minor issues are forgotten in a wall induction and exhaust aural pleasure....A simple xpipe mod and:

I've pretty much ruled out the Porsche as it seems to be the obvious choice, although I think it's by far the best all rounder are the best drivers car. I don't like cars that are too accomplished though, I prefer an 'edge' !!

So I've just got to test a Z4M. By far the most manly, if that kind of thing bothers you, and will be a hell of a lot cheaper than the SLK which suffers from expensive servicing, potential huge bills from the roof and gearbox, and front disks are £1200 a pair....if pre-2006.

Have to say that this was an issue for me when I had to replace my Z4 3.0 before christmas. Test drove a Z4 roadster and it sounded awesome. Great car. Then I tried a Cayman 2.7. It just felt more special. A much better drive in the twisty stuff. The only reason I'd consider the M was if I'm going to be up and down the motorway or want to win the traffic light grandprix. Even in standard form the Cayman is an awesome machine!

My problem is that I'm a complete engine we - I know the Z4M and Porsche are both dynamically better cars and probably more sensible choice, but its clips like those that totally sway my decision.

And despite the fact people say they are a bit girly (note, Mercedes say the largest purchasers of SLK's are women in their 50's) in black with some minor tweaks I think they can look pretty decent:

Ok..so all things being equal:

Which would be quickest round the 'ring?
Which would win the traffic light grand prix?

Cayman quickest round the ring.
Amg Merc quickest for the traffic light grandprix.
Z4 for the most fun whilst doing it.

Both great cars the Cayman a better daily imo but the z4mc feels much more special and a better toy that can still be used as a daily car as they come with lots of goodies! The cayman most things are an optional extra!

As far as driving them both the z4mc feels like much more of an event imo of course.

Your Zed makes that Cayman look terrible on that pic.

Thats because it is! Only have the Zed now biggrin The cayman had a full Milltek exhaust and remap pushing around 319bhp on the last rolling road. The zed feels brutal in comparison but it's defiantly no faster! Much more fun though.

For me a crucial factor is that the Mercedes is the only proper coupe that is also a convertible.

It really does make it two cars in one, a discrete exec cruiser and a open top roadster.
