I quite like the Starlet Glanzas (st name though). There are plenty of crap looking ones around, but there are a few decent looking ones but they tend to attract a premium. I hear they can be fairly nippy, though the handling is poor and the interior rubbish. I'd still like to have a go and see though.
I miss mine, red, 99 plate, recaro interior and an LSD.

Managed a 14.3 at 100.4mph at Santa pod!

They're not the best handlin car in the world but they're a lot of fun and so easy to work on.

My old mk2 golf was 6.6 to 60 and I got over 40mpg on a longer run.

It was a 2.0 16v with a little bit of work but was a great day to day car as long as you can get along with older cars. Insurance was only ~£600 too, probbaly alot cheaper if you do it on a classic policy

I was looking at these recently and it seems below £4000 the qaulity is a tad variable. One dealer I spoke to said the DC2 he had in stock had an engine warning light on, which he at first suspected was an O2 sensor failure but his mechanic checked the car and reckoned it was 'only' a problem with the catalytic convertor!

Thank goodness for that! I was worried it might be an £80 O2 sensor at first! rolleyes

Celica 190 looked like a good shout but I've just looked them up and its 33mpg and 0-60 in 7.2 which isn't really better than the Mgs 7.4 seconds and 37mpg.
Mine has been getting between 33 and 37mpg on my commute so far. I'm sure it could do 40mpg on a run. Not sure how the ZR is in real life though.

As 0-60 times mean precisely naff all I'm not sure that's a really valid reason to discount a car.

The MG is also in a lower tax bracket.
This is a good point, however smile

I never saw more than 30mpg out of mine, even on long dual carriageway drives (I did a run from Newcastle to Wetherby and back when I bought it).

Could it do more than 30mpg? Maybe, if you're below the boost threshold of the turbo. But it's just coming into turbo range at 70mph, so cruising will see it guzzle fuel. The gearing is pretty short and punchy, and I was getting about 22-23 mpg out of mine around town when taking it easy and less than 20 when I was really giving it some.

I'd also steer clear of ones with the boost turned up to up the bhp. It's got more than enough grunt as it is, and even my standard example could struggle to get the power down in the wet. Just buy a standard one and revel in it, if you can afford to run them they are really good cars.
Sounds like something was wrong with yours, I've got 38.5mpg on a run and around 27mpg around town. Mine is the heavier GT version too (rev 3). As for struggling to put the power down in the wet, I have no such problem. The engine is right over the driven wheels and provides brilliant traction; it's why they make such successful drag cars. Sure, if you red line it and dump the clutch it struggles for grip but you really have to be trying.

Back on topic, I'd be looking at a Clio 182.

Personally I wouldn't describe that as a big problem, as most of them are de-catted anyway so it's not a big deal in the scheme of things, and not expensive to sort. A lot of these cars will throw the engine light on when de-catted, much like Evo's, Impreza's, ST's etc.

Also, here in N.I, you'd struggle to pay over 4k for one. I can't understand the price differences in them from here to England. I done a deal on one yesterday that I'd describe as 'good' condition for £1950, with 12 months MOT and no tax. It's not what I'd describe as show condition, but I'd be fussy.

Clio 182 is the only thing that immediately omes to mind which is going to be enough of a step up to be worth changing.

Some people in here are absolutely dreaming with some of their mpg stats!

Clio 172 would be the best bet especially if you want to try track it too, and easy to drive quickly.

I have driven a Fiat Coupe 20VT which was great for the money and worth a look if insurance is ok. Running a servicing is worse than the Clio.

Alternative option is a Leon 170 TDI remapped. I have been out in one which dynoed at 220hp and 350 lb ft of torque. It wasnt too bad even on a trackday, It'll easily reach your economy figures, and get less attention from insurers and the boys in blue.

X-type 3.0 Sport - 230 ish BHP, 0-60 6.7, can do 36-40 on a run but 21-22 more likely in town.

Selling for peanuts right now.

MR2 turbo? It’s got around 240bhp (up to 280 with a few inexpensive mods), 25-35mpg and surprisingly cheap insurance.

£3000 would get you a decent example too.

HAHA Even my N/A won't see 35mpg easily. Cracking cars though. Best BHP an N/A will have is 170-odd (7.something to 60), unless you are jammy enough to find a 'beams' for that money...

Yes, the BEAMS models are extremely rare. They sound like fun though.

I can get over 30 with cruise at around 75/80, insurance is group 15 or 16.

admit £3k is pushing it though

I can't see how an n/a wouldn't get 35mpg. I was getting consistently over that in my turbo driving to and around Cornwall, with two people in the car and both boots filled with luggage.

I was down to 26mpg around town in the cold weather recently, but I've found my MR2 pretty economical for what it is.

30 mpg? From a 535?

Down a hill maybe but I'd say 20mpg was more like it...

Only 190bhp but has the 7 second to 60 time you want.

Can easily be got for under 3k.

You can probably get a high mileage S2K for that price too, not sure if i would want too though.
Dont think i have ever seen 35mpg even trying in mine(corolla).90 miles to 20quid tesco 99 driving like a nun .and only one engagement of lift.28mpg allround

clio 172 is the only answer

I think you'd have to drive like an old woman to get 35mpg in an MR2 Turbo, 25mpg is optimistic for most drivers, less for petrolheaded enthusiasts who like a dab of speed here and there.
