Pedestrians with a deathwish
Discussion
Is this on the increase?
I notice more and more pedestrians just step onto the road without looking or possibly caring. Esepcially when the sideroads cross their pavement path. I unerstand tht these roads are not as busy as the main roads but for fks sake, you still need to look before you cross, surely.
Even worse, I saw two women standing on that side road having a chat as though it was pavement. they saw me approach, did nothing. I stopped a foot in front of them, they took a half step to the side, but were still on the fking sideroad! So I carried on just being stopped there with my indicator on when they finally clicked that I was trying to use the road they were standing on!
Even more shocking, are young mothers with a pram. Again was turning into a sideroad the other day, there was a car parked right up to the turn blocking the view of the pvement and it was night, so naturally i slowed right down and start the turn. An idiot mum dressed in black pushed her pram onto the road whilst looking over her left shoulder!! Imeagine her suprise when she turned her head to see what she just pushed up against with her pram! Luckily one of us was semi thinking, but this isn't even about who's right of way it was. It's no good being bloody right when your child is in a coma...
And lastly, it's people who cross the roads in designated areas, such as zebra crossings. Yep, fair enough, it's your right of way, but it does not offer you immunity against distracted or reckless drivers.
I just don't get it. when I am about to step onto a road as a pedestrian, wether i am on the phone or texting or whatnot, i automatically become mroe alert. It's not even a conscious effort, it's automatic...

Yes, I think it is.
I grew up with the Green Cross Code and the video about the little squirrel who nearly gets run over, and if a kid got knocked over near the school then a) it was a big announcement in assembly and b) it wasn't a case of "let's feel sorry for poor little Johnny and punish the nasty driver who knocked him down" but "keep your bloody eyes open and don't let it happen to any of you !!"
I used to walk to the office in London and the number of people I saw stepping out to cross roads without looking was worrying - the number of near misses with cyclists in particular was very high (and not always a cyclist who was running a red light... ).
I don't think it's even people who are distracted by other things like being on the phone or listening to music - they just seem not to pay attention to what's going on around them.

Also quite a lot of people seem to deliberately slow down when a car's approaching. Wtf?
Marks them out as being hard. Usually only done by young men from less economically developed housing estates. Sometimes, I just wish I had immunity from punishment so that when a mouth breather intentionally slows down while j-walking in front of the car, I can turn on the windscreen wipers and carry on regardless Pavement Version ... I had a chuckle a few months back when waiting for the man to turn green at a pedestrian crossing. Amongst others there were two people on my side and one on the other, all on their phones. They were still rooted to the spot for at least 10-15 seconds whilst the rest of us crossed. Dont get me started on the slalom course they create once back under way.

I can't believe thatyou don't care about the dents in your car's bodywork.

It's the mentality which has not so much crept in, but bounded in with a set of cymbals and a flashing neon light. That is, everybody else is either to blame, at fault, or responsible.
When they cross the road, it is quite obviously the responsibility of other road users to ensure they do so safely.
If or when something happens, it is quite obviously somebody else's fault, irrespective of how they chose to cross.

At a junction, the pedestrian has the right of way... As long as they start to cross before car arrives
The laws of the road may be in their favour, but the laws of physics may not...My brother rear ended a car which had stopped while trying to turn left because pedestrians were crossing the road at the junction. My brother was livid about having a crash caused by idiots. He was even more livid when it was pointed out to him that of all the people involved only he was doing something wrong.

But equally there are situations where pedestrians suddenly change course and step into the road without looking, or the kid who runs into the road after their football - the driver / cyclist has very little, if any, time to react. Seen it happen in London (fortunately without major consequences). In such circumstances, the soft squidgy thing which is likely to come off worse to the heavy metal thing should have a little more responsibility for their actions, IMO.
Just because they can step into the road, doesn't mean they should.
My misses has a habit of looking each way but not really looking... She's usually gabbling on about something or other whilst I look out for her safety..
Unfortunately, I KNOW she isn't the only one who doesn't always pay attention and whats worse is its become the norm for me around my way to have to slam on the anchors as kids and adults play chicken at the last minute.
I wouldn't mind if someone was waiting by the roadside and took a quick jog across, but these idiots tend to run in from the grass about 10m from the road and just keep going. Any protest is met by death threats. Sod the EDL and BNP getting rid of minorities, get rid of these offensive tards..
