Passed a camera van in the truck in a 30 limit. Being fully loaded I couldnt be sure my speed hadnt crept up going down the hill towards the camera. Anyways when I'd finished my drop I went back and spoke to the copper in the van (very nice chap gave me a free "speed aware wales" pen!) He was a retired sergeant topping up his pension catching speeders in south wales! After he put down his copy of Which? magazine he told me "limit + 10% + 2mph". He showed off his camera's ability to zoom and catch people nearly a mile away as an old couple zoomed through the 30 zone at 42 chatting away as they sailed past the fully marked vanrolleyes. He also said they can't do you through their windscreen as it corrupts the laser beam, therefore inadmissable as evidence. Sorry for the rambling post. HTH Jim.
My understanding is that this figure differs between different forces, am I wrong on this? Any Trafpol. in tonight?

I wouldn't worry too much though OP. There may be a very, very small chance that something may come of it, I wouldn't have thought so though.

I wouldn't worry about it OP. Wait 2 weeks and if nothing arrives, consider it a warning to keep a better eye out for vans in future hehe

I got three points back in 99 doing 79 on the M6.

I had been driving less than two weeks.

Still feel bitter about it now!

An indicated 80mph would be more like 76mph at most (speedos are usually 5%+ off). I understand the guideline for officers - although these are only guidelines - is 10% +2mph. So on a 70mph road they will allow up to 79mph before any penalties.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm only going to echo most others on here. Your speedometer will most likely be a good 5+mph over-reading at 70-80mph so if what you say is totally correct, I'd doubt you went over 75mph at worst.

Likelihood is you'll hear nothing but considering you're a new driver and insurance is probably bottom-clenching expensive already, I'd take it easy for a while. Not easy for a new young driver these days..

That is the real crunch IMO.

Another conviction and you could become almost uninsurable.

I suspect you will be alright this time. Learn the lesson.

Do you not have a radar detector? Or other means of avoidance?

VBRJ I would imagine...

Seriously if you were indicating 75-80 I should think you'll be fine. 80 indicated would probably be 73 to 74 mph true speed in most cars.

And I would be surprised if you got a nick for 74 mph.

Your speedo normally shows you going faster than you actually are, so it may be ok.

Hey, I know this is in the wrong section of the forum but as I have only just created an account I cannot post in 'Speed, Plod & The Law'. Mods please move if you can.

Earlier on today I was approaching a blind corner on a dual carriage way cruising around 75/80 when I spotted a speed camera van tucked in on the side with its rear doors open and the tripod/camera on full display. I passed my test 4 months ago and currently have a clean license, will i get a ban or just 3 points & a fine. Any advice would be much appreciated, Mills.

Dont worry about it.As already said an indicated 80mph will be more like low 70's,they wont do you for that.
I have been past many of these in 30 zones nudging an indicated 40mph,st myself but never been done.

There's a section on the A34 with a blind bend. It's up hill so you naturally slow down but it's a bit dodgy taking it at 70 plus,

Would post a link but not too sure how to using iPad.

In the highly unlikely event that you were actually recorded I imagine the most likely outcome for such a low velocity will be a speed awareness course.

I got to go on one for 50 in a 40, in Derby at least you would have to be caught doing 86 in a 70 to get points.

My first speeding ticket after 29 yrs of driving was for 80mph on the "A48 motorway" that the M4 extends into in Dyfed, Wales. £60 fine plus 3 points but took the speed awareness course to keep clean.

So, now cruise control is bang on 77 and not 80ish as before.

Moral of the story.......you can still be done for 80 on a dual carriageway/motorway.
erm... moral of the story is don't speed not don't speed too much but i like your logic!biggrin
