Have a budget of about 6-7k, looked at audi a3 3.2, decided its probably a bit too thirsty for my 50 miles i do a day and have been borrowing a scirocco 2.0gt. Id love to be able to afford to buy the scirocco from the friend thats lending it me, i cant afford the 15k shes asking !

I fancy a mark 5 gti, but not sure what to think of buying a 80k mile car for 6/7 k - seems like a big risk; turbo chargers going pop, other various bits and pieces going wrong.

Basically i want a reliable, reasonable mpg car thats petrol, dsg if possible and has about 200 brake. Ive considered the cupra r and although theyre wicked bits of kit im not sure i fit their demographic any more. Ive looked at subaru wrx's and although they claim to get 35 on a run from trawling the forums ive found its more like 24.

What are the mk5 gti pitfalls?

SOrry if this makes no sense, im tired and am getting a bit bored looking for 'the car', because trust me this'd be a lot easier if i had 10k !

My MK5 GTI has now covered 75K, I've owned it for 6 months/10K for my 58 mile each way commute (3 days a week). So far replaced both rear ARB drop links as they were knocking. No other issues at all. Easily get high 30s sticking to the speed limit. Best was 42 driving like a vicar wink

Doesn't seem to make any MPG difference with 95 or 98 RON.

The interior is like new, they wear well inside. 18" Monzas can suffer if they're kerbed.

Cambelt will be due at around 75K, so budget for that and a water pump if it's not been done.

Nice with MFSW, heated seats and Xenons smile

It's just a recommended precautionary change as there's no extra labour cost when the cambelt is being changed.

Megane R26.. Lose some quality compared to the Golf but they're a very capable car and have proved to be reliable.

350 remap will see you with at least 250hp/270lbft

You lose some of the "Class" of the Golf but you probably get more toys and to be honest build quality is up there with VW and the reliability is probably better. drive them sensibly and you get good MPG

Represents amazing value for money and a cracking hot hatch, premium sound system as standard, leather and plenty of toys elsewhere.

if red isnt your colour there are plenty of black or silver ones about in your budget if you search a littler further

If MPG is your main driver, is getting a +200bhp car wise as you will always be watching your fuel gauge??

I drive a lot with work and would love to have a GTI, ST3, MPS etc but I just know I cant with the amount of miles I do, I watch my fuel in a diesel, god knows what I would be like in a 200bhp petrol!

reviews depend on what your looking at, the professional ones seem fair, the personal ones all vary, good and bad but I'm always of the impression that if you really want a particular car, regardless of what reviews you read you will still get it.

Go with your gut, hot hatch conversations on here could end in war if enough people get invovled smile

Isn't the MPG on the ST about as bad as an RX-8?

Reading on forums you are lucky to get mid 20's combined.

IMO you would be foolish noy to consider the Leon FR DSG. Not that common but for value its hard to beat.

They also look good.

I do about 900 miles a month thats about £220 fuel cost @ 26 mpg average. I dont see that as too much?! If i was doing 15k miles id consider a derve but why spend more on a 2.5 5 cyl with 225 brake that does 5 mpg less on a run than a 200 brake car that will do 32/35 as per golf gti?
My talk of reviews comes from evo mag in general .

If you dont see £220 a month for 900 miles as much, then fair play go for it, Golf GTi or R26 or anything in that range of car is what you can call fun to drive.

For 900 miles it only cost's me £100, if that!

I still think the MPS is worth considering simply for the performance and value for money. problem I see for you is, if your driving around in a nice VW Scirocco, dropping to a used ford, Renault or Seat wont feel the same at all! smile

Nope it wont, ive had a dull diesel for 3 years and now i drive less miles i fancied getting something thats relatively fun to drive but not as extreme on costs as a Evo or Scoob. Halfway house !

What about a lower mile, newer Suzuki Swift Sport or Panda 100Hp if fuel is an issue?
