A Mini without a doubt. The large majority of them are driven by girls.

Cars that are macho = men's cars. Cars that aren't macho = girls cars.

Qualifying test: If Chuck Norris would look cool in it, it's a man's car. If Chuck would look a bit silly in it, girl's car.

Ahh, but Chuck Norris doesn't need a car as he can punch a hole in the fabric of time and space and re-appear where he wants.

I have an MX5 Mk1 and love the fact that it has a cult following amongst driving enthusiasts. That cult following is partly because of the prejudice of others who worry far too much about what others think.

I'm an MGF owner so probably a bit biased, but I find a lot of the supposed girls/hairdressers cars to be a cracking drive.

I suppose anything that can be considered pretty or cute is probably up for being called a birds car. Oddly enough those kind of comments I've had about my little ghey roadster have been from middle aged fat lads...who drive a bottom of the range Audi with no options ticked
EFA.

My missus doesnt like driving my MX5: its got no power steering, not much servo on the brakes, no electric windows, the heater is a bit crude (footwell heating is either hot as hades, or off)

Where as i like it for all of the above.
Plus it was a cheap, easy to run and maintain RWD stopgap til i can afford a Caterham.

I know quite a few "girls" who would have most of the blokes on here eating their dust, no matter if they were driving an MX5, A Dodge Viper, or a 5 ton truck.

People should be c a bit careful who they sling off at, if they don't want to be cut up just down the road.

2 seater sports cars used to be mens cars, when men wore hats, smoked pipes and looked good in tweed. The arrival of the hot hatch saw the sorts car all but die. When it re-emerged with the MX-5 men had moved onto sharp suits, big mobile phones and Golf GTI's. Girls were the main customers of new MX5's (and MGFs). This is why they have become a girls a car. No fault of the car itself.

^^ This and the fact that the new breed of affordable sports cars were easy to drive, reliable and didn't require the regular greasing of nipples.

girly cars are to me anything that looks effeminate:

mx5
z4 convertible
elise
TT
new mini
fiat 500
baby merc convertible

  • MGF * biggrin
that kind of thing
Cheers Dave and thanks for all the comments so far.

Dave, not disputing your list as such but the point of the thread is to determine not WHAT cars people think are girly, but WHY they're considered girly. Is it subjective opinoin or are there objective criteria?
to me its because the styling has a look or feel of femininity, curvacious cars thou can be masculine

the elise / exige styling nails this head on in my books, the elise is ultra girly, the exige ultra butch, technically very very similar cars

People call my MX-5 and old Z4 girls car because they are 2 seater soft tops.
MX-5 is about to have a turbo fitted and also has a hardtop and the 'Zed had over 330bhp, still a 'hairdresser' though. Oh well, I have a girls car / hairdressers car. I can live with that!

The officer of the law that gave my MX5 a section 59 ASBO thingy didn't think it was a girl's car. He told me it was a menace and is likely to cause distress to other road users. He said people may think gun fire is going off, or the four horsemen of the apocalypse have been let out of hell. For the good of society I have been told to keep it off the roads.

Was it loud? Or were you playing music loud?
I have heard of someone getting an ASBO for having roof off at night. He said he didn't have music on...officer said he was 'showing off'.

I think there has been a step change recently, where I live (Aberdeen) many women drive X5s/Cayennes/Audi jeep thingys and these are the kind of vehicles I now associate with ladies! MX5s generally are driven by enthusiasts, notwithstanding their gender, they are good fun to dive, although I always thought they needed a bit more poke..

The mk2 MX5s are definitely girls cars, more feminine looking, more comforts etc.

The mk1s are too raw, and pop up headlights are manly, to be considered girly.

I suspect the 'hairdressers car' thing came along with the introduction of the mk2.

90% of mk2s I see being driven, are women. 90% of mk1s are men. Point proven.

..Not baiting mk2 owners, much?hehe

It's got 45 weber carbs and a straight through exhaust that spits flames and bangs and pops like an old escort rally car.

To be fair, he's got a point, but it was the middle of the day in the country, the ASBO was a bit harsh and the officer was a fool trying to say it was misfiring and the noise was from the exhaust. He didn't understand what intake roar was and how the engine was dumping unspent fuel into the exhaust making it pop, not misfire.

MX5s girlie? Sure, as standard out of the box. But show me a better chasis for the money?

I can understand the 'girl's car' thing, what I cannot understand for the life of me is the 'man's car' thing.

Cars have been easy to drive since about 1955. Road cars haven't been properly fast until very recent times at best. The only cars that are hard to drive are those that have something wrong with them, imo. 4x4's are for those who simply cannot drive boxedin. Audis are horrible, and already said, have engines hanging over the front of their front axles.

Where does the 'man's car' come from? A man's car lives on the race track surely, where the proper petrolheads can be found. How can there be such a thing as a man's road car?
