Quick question, for the last two months I've done well over 1000 miles extra mileage going to different locations for work, training and supporting teams. I get 30ppm which I get as cash with vat fuel receipt as proof. Someone told me about a hmrc p87 form which apparently enables me to claim extra due to my employer paying below the recommended 45ppm rate? Any truth in this?

Yes, you claim the difference between what you get paid and 45ppm on the first 10,000 business miles, then IIRC 25ppm thereafter.

Yep. Download it at the end of the tax year, fill it in and send it off to your tax office.

You only get the tax back on the difference. So in your case 40% (as this is PH, you'll obviously be a higher rate tax payer) of 15p.

If your 1000 miles is an ususual amount of use, the firm really ought to pay more than 30p.

Well they keep this hush hush, thanks for the info. How would I find out what percentage I get? Sadly not a company director by a long shot, only earn a bit more than 20k.

I just got a rebate for the last 4 years difference between 30 ppm and 40 ppm, as I only just found out. I will be putting my new claim in in April for this financial year - well worth it, paid for a set of tyres on my car!

Nothing hush hush about it, it is your responsibility. A lot of us are in a similar position.. Oh and enjoy filling in your tax return every year after you start claiming! frown

It'll be 20% then. So for 1000 miles you'll get £30. Yay!
Remember to keep records of the journeys too - where from and to, and what the purpose was. Keep them for 6 years.

Really, as I said esrlier, if you're an occasional user the firm should pay you the full 45p. Suggest they hire you a car instead.

Oh well better than a kick in the nads! No chance on getting the full mileage amount, they're a tight, Northern but national retailer. Working it out it's actually quite a lot more than 1000 miles so will be worth doing. So do I just fill out and submit a p87 by April?

I've claimed back between £500 - £1,000 per annum over the last few years so definately worth doing.

Make sure you keep really good records as when I first claimed they wanted evidence of the car I used (purchase receipt etc). Also the postcode of places visited, a brief narrative and also if you don't go the direct route, due to roadworks for instance then keep a note of this as I got challenged a few times.

Send it after the end of the tax year - 5th April 2012 is the last day - so you can capture the whole year. There's no panic to get it in.
