It's the inherent dullness and vulgarity of the RS3 that ruins it for me, the fact that to the untrained eye it looks like every other A3 sportback on the road, but when you look at it closer it's the vulgarity of the big grilles and those awful wheels.

Audi as a brand are one that I will never currently consider, I have yet to drive one that leaves me thinking I want to go and drive some more, they do what they do moderately well but as an enjoyable drivers car I just haven't sampled anything from them of late that could be classed as such.

I'd far rather blow 40k on a near new E90 M3 if I needed 4 doors (which I do) and blistering road car performance (which I don't)

That's my opinion, id far rather have a 1M over the RS3 on looks alone, coupled to the fact it's a more focused car deals the deal for me

horses for courses

the 1M is a superb car, but the 3 is like no other audi i have ever driven (and i have driven a lot (not the V8 RS4)) its a bonkers little thing (i owned a B5 RS4 from new)

on a track (with someone picking up the tyre bill tongue out) i would go with the 1M, in the real world with heavy traffic, rain and snow, a family and lugging crap around the 3 is just a far better all rounder

Interesting, you find the RS3 "Vulgar" because of the use of "big grills", yet you had to look at it closly to establish that? As you say of course, the RS3 looks just like every other A3, which you must also find Vulgar? rolleyes

This kind of thing obviously repulses you, yet, you prefer the bulging and pumped up 1M with it's restrained appearance? laugh

Your post really makes a lot of sense, thanks for sharing!!!clapsleep

I think at £40k its stonkingly good value.

Silly quick, sounds great, beautiful interior, 4WD, rooms for 5 plus a dog\shopping\buggy - practicality without resorting to an estate car.

Much more discreet than an Evo\Subaru with an infinitely nicer interior, I really don't think this car has any direct competition - the others either have 2WD, are saloons\estates, are missing a cylinder or have horrible interiors.

And I'm an Audi 'hater' normally.

I assume you know, but just in case you don't, "Sportback" is just a marketing term that differentiates the 3 door A3 hatchback from the 5 door A3 hatchback. They use "Sportback" on other models too, none of which are necessarily a hatchback at all.

All the Sportbacks are actually hatchbacks A3, A5 and A7. But I do agree with you about the marketing terms, all manufacturers use them. Dont know why it bothers people so much.

I just think it looks like a great all-rounder if you had to have one car - smart enough to show up at a clients house but not too flash or in your face. Good in all weather with amazing pace and lots of space. I really fancy one of these.

Yeah, I heard at least half of Audi's limited allocation had gone to Hairdresser's. They seem to like RS products from Audi! jesterredcard

Um, no. No they're not.

Audi A7 Sportback not being a hatchback, yesterday.

The Audi A5 Sportback does a very poor hatchback imitation too.

Here's a good contrast of a real hatchback opening:

Fastback, possibly. In my book, "saloon" with a lifting rear window more like it.
