40k + seems very steep, for what is essentially a 5 door hatch, no matter how fast

why?
Lack of a proper gearbox, too heavy, 4wd, fewer cylinders, dull looks, etc. All imo of course.

How much smaller is this than a 5 door impreza hatch?
Looks a likely contender for us if we can get on with the auto and they drop in price a bit over then next year.
I doubt a manual S3 sportback would seem that much slower in the real world.

Haldex 4 still cannot get power over to the rear wheels in anywhere near the time that Audi's torsen or Subaru's systems can. As Harris said in a recent article on here, the rs5 has a much better system. j

Everyone has rights to an opinion!

I have owned a S3 for 3 years and love it. RS is on order and for me 5 doors, extra power, 4wd, few toys as standard makes it ideal for my life at the moment. Mpg is ok for the 10k miles i do a year and i actually like its understated looks, its the sound that makes me smile although 40k was a bit painful!

I think Autocar or someone timed it at 3.9s to 60 which is ridiculously fast for a hot hatch. Having said that it still does not make me want one. As stated earlier it looks too much like the rest of the range. If i spent 40k on an A3 i want it to look like its worth that much

Works for me. Fits on my narrow drive, can get mates in the back, works in the snow, all the creature comforts, doesn't upset clients, auto great for London, manual paddle change and silly power great for better roads.

And compliments my Spyder. May have to get one. Somehow.

Another cock-mobile from the guys at Audi. Simply a car for people to wave their penis's about saying "my car is as quick as a Ferrari."
Really?
Yes really. Speak to an owner of another fast Audi and you'll see what I mean. A number of my friends have had S3's and A5's. They all think they are faster than any other car on the planet. Even the diesel owners are at it!

Good cars I know, great engineering. But I don't need to be persistently told.

Apart from the S3, I've always found the A3 not too bad looking inside and out, but incredibly boring and common, with a lot of drivers giving them a bad rep. The sportback makes it look ugly. Now apply that to the RS3, with the plain twin exhausts making it look like another 2.0 TDI, I think this is a fantastic idea and a fantastic sleeper. I've seen two of these in the flesh and it makes you want to laugh at how unassuming they look for the power underneath. I'd have one :-)

Would it be so bad if Audi took a page from Toyota and simply built a small sports car that is fun to drive? VW you have the money take a risk just once. j

A different planet from the Impreza in performance terms?

haha I wish, I don't have a car any more, living in London I don't need one.

However on a serious note, all of the requirements stated in this guys post can be found in an M3 saloon not far from new under warranty. Hence my lack of understanding of your excellent comment ;-)

p.s thanks for highlighting my out of date profile

Because i loooooove hot hatches, whatever they are.

40K steep, yes, very, but lets face it, most of us, even if we wanted one and could afford it, wont really get a look in as they are all spoken for.

And yes, there are plenty of other cars available for the price (new or sh), however, if someone wants to spend that amount on an Audi then why not?

Some will say its mad to spend that on a 1M.

Horses for courses etc.

If we look at power to weight:

2002 Audi S3 225bhp / 1045kg = 215bhp/t
RS3 340bhp / 1575kg = 215 bhp/t!

I'd have one in an instant.

Like my car. Anonymous, practical but can be quick and even a bit fun when the situation emerges.

Innercity+1 car space means you need to make compromises. When that car is also needed for work you need to make additional compromises.
