If Peugeot or Citroen had a 340bhp hatch that had a 4.6 to 60 time we'd be stting our pants with excitement but it seems everyone's jaded with big power.

4.6 to 60 - I mean that's mega fast. To 60 may be irrelevant but it speaks volumes for how bloody fast this is.

I wonder what everyone who slates it is driving? rolleyes

It's an Audi.

Clarkson told them to hate it.

You'll have to excuse them. They are just feeble minded.

Really?
Yes really. Speak to an owner of another fast Audi and you'll see what I mean. A number of my friends have had S3's and A5's. They all think they are faster than any other car on the planet. Even the diesel owners are at it!

Good cars I know, great engineering. But I don't need to be persistently told.
As fast audis go, i dont think the S3 or A5 quite qualify.

To be honest, small mods and they can be pretty quick.

Golf R/S3 can get away with a remap, a downpipe and an intake for a mid 12 second quarter mile. That is pretty damn quick compared to most cars out there. Yeah, not supercar fast. But still pretty damn quick.

If we look at power to weight:

2002 Audi S3 225bhp / 1045kg = 215bhp/t
RS3 340bhp / 1575kg = 215 bhp/t!

redface
Whoever told you that the '02 S3 weighed 1045kg was lying to you. More like ~ 1350

A different planet from the Impreza in performance terms?
depends on the scooby, there's some mighty fast ones about, like the cossie and litchfield specials

certainly faster than both of my old shape STi PPPs (52 and 55 plate)

Overpriced and bland......

But still quicker than a 1M over a typical A or B road.
A stonkingly good car.

I'm not sure this can be fairly described as a hot hatch. It's more than that, or at least more than my perception of what a hot hatch is. Certainly with 340bhp nestled in nigh on 1,600kg, the term 'hot hatch' just seems wrong.

Could say more about the friends you hand around with rather than Audi owners generally?

I have owned a good selection of warm Audis and BMWs amongst other things and I wouldn't over estimate their abilities in any way.

All this hate for a car not many have actually driven.

The rs3 has a modern interior similar to the old rs4 or TT but nicer. nothing wrong with that.
The engine is has won various awards and is an absolute rocket, easily faster than a rs4 and that was fast enough.
The gearbox is a giant leap for hot hatches, the speed and the sound of the gear shifts are just next level.

My conclusion is less is more and it sound like this i'm sold.

i have recently driven 5 or 6 different audi's all 61 plates, from cooking fat A3's to a 45k black edition A5 turbo, and the A3 is just as nice and well finished as the A4 and A5, I was surprised as every one bangs on about how old the A3 is but with the facelift, new lights and interior it looks as modern and as identical as any other audi

I've not driven a Golf RS so I can't comment but compared to the R32, IMO, the the STI has more accurate steering, better turn in..better traction out of a bend...doesn't feel as nose heavy..and is noticeably quicker..the R32 is a nicer place to be...more refined and looks way better but if I had to tackle a b road in the quickest time possible I would pick and STI.
In fairness I have only driven the R32 once at speed, so the comparison is probably not fair, considering you have owned both your opinion carries more weight.

I find it surprising that no one has mentioned the disparity between this review and the ones in every magazine. Every magazine has slated this car; saying it is really flat, disappointing and inert. This review is almost a over the top in how good the car is.
Says something about having our opinions influenced by journalists alone.
And that applies to all the 'haters' on here who have almost certainly never driven one of these. How can you slag a car off that you haven't even driven?

Ive read quite a lot of good press about the RS3! Evo - 4 stars, Top gear - good review, Auto Express - 4 stars, car Magazine - 4 stars, though Autocar only give it 3 stars but then again its not a Porsche or BMW so the would wink

Funny, I was thinking something similar when I started to read it! However, over the top? (see below)

"It's too bland", "It's too expensive", "no it isn't", "yes it is", blah blah blah

I too think it's on the expensive side, but as a petrolhead, a 335bhp hatch, 4wd, 5cyl engine, very well made,"sounds" bloody great to me! If I ever have the pleasure of sampling one, I'll report back if anyone's interested, until then, I'll hand over to those with lots of valuable opinions about something they've never even seen in the flesh! rolleyes
