Incorrect use of front foglamps is mildly iritating, but I dont understad the big issue people have with DRL's

He hasn't given up asking and I've got a very boring night shift coming up...

...current favourite idea is;

"sorting" his fogs... And then wiring the wipers to the input of his rev counter.

Well the van has DRLs (non LED) AND fogs AND window tints all round.

I am therefore doomed to chavdom forever.

But it's a van so I think it's just about allowed.

Maybe.

Has anyone else noticed a new trend with nearly all the latest reveals at Geneva this year, in that none seem have front fog lights fitted anymore? Wonder if this is a sign of things to come...

I notice every one of the cars shown have the "fairy light" DRL's fitted!! shoot

You could do what Steve Parrish once allegedly did to Barry Sheene's Porsche:

Re-routed the windscreen washer pipes to the inside of the car, aimed to spray at the occupant's crotch area! biggrin

No, it's just that, like dipped beam and main beam which are integrated into the same housing, they now have a third setting for fog.

As a result of European legislation adopted in 2008 dedicated daytime running lights (DRL) have been required on all new types of passenger cars and small delivery vans since February 2011. Trucks and buses will follow from August 2012.

There is no requirement to retro-fit DRLs to existing cars and no Europe-wide requirement for drivers of cars without dedicated daytime running lights to drive with headlights on during the day.

Where fitted dedicated DRLs will come on automatically with the ignition.

True fog lights are as far off the driver's visual axis as possible. This performs two functions. Firstly, to light the immediate road ahead (also extremely useful in country roads with no kerbs) and, secondly, because water droplets reflect light most strongly close to the axis of illumination. To demonstrate:

Notice the "halo" on the (damp) grass around the shadow of the photographer's head. This isn't a trick, just sunlight reflecting back close to the axis of the light rays. Observe how it drops off very quickly.

They'll just consign them to the options list so they can bump the list price up even more.

They were nearly always sold on sports packs, advertised to make your car look sporty. Now everyone has those stupid DLR LED's that are just as bright but "legal"

I wouldn't mind my cars not having them (barely ever use them anyway) but I'm not a fan of how manufacturers always tended to fill the void with a black piece of plastic.
At least the pics in the OP don't look like they're missing parts of the car.

Depending on your age and memory, 'Deacon' might be an acceptable moniker? biggrin
How about flid? Or Benny?

There has to be a name we can use for 'tards that only causes offence to the right people.

Even my 2003 car has the fogs built into the headlight (and then bizzarrly indicators where the fogs usually are). People here seem to be unsure as to what a fog light is, its a flat low aimed beam without a cut off on the top right, it doesnt have to be seperate to the rest of the headlight and its not for marking yourself in fog its for illuminating the way ahead.

Looks like the way forward is to incorporate the lights together probably to save $ and with DRL being mandatory cars could end up looking like christmas trees if they add anymore individual lights!

Considering the Spastic Society changed its name to Scope - I think Scopey is a suitable insult.

I'm going to get in trouble for this!

I find fog lights extremely useful on Dark unlit roads where they light the bit of road immediately in front of my car meaning I can still spot potholes and things that don't become visible when looking forwards, they seem more useful on the same roads when very wet.

I don't get the hatred for them just because some people haven't a clue how to use them.

Agreed - really handy in the fog having the kerb 5 ft in front of me slightly more visible
Well yes, it is in theory because they're only designed to be used in conditions where the choice is between being able to see the kerb five feet in front of you or not see the road at all. If you're able to do more than 10mph, front foglights should not be on. I never understood why they didn't simply make them automatically switch off at over 20mph or something.
