Sounds boring compared to tricking up mental MR2`s Ollie!
Oh well, as you were... ( shout out when you jump back in with the spanners)

Mate has a 986S and whilst it's balance & handling ability is unquestionable, it seems a bit, well boring.

Given the choice, I'd rather the lairier ///M car.

Shirley a decent E46 'vert must only be 8-9 grand these days?

The Porsche is a smooth power delivery and fantastic handling, but it wouldnt see which way the M3 went given a straight road.
Isn't that the point tho'? If you want to go fast in straight lines then buy a big-engined yank tank and hope you never have to turn the steering wheel. Hell - just book a load of plane tickets and enjoy the straight-line acceleration and speed on the take-off.

Roads aren't straight. We are talking about sports cars here. Delicacy of handling and purity of control are a very large part of the package, and the heavy, badly-balanced BMW simply can't touch the Boxster on these fronts.

The Boxster will go round corners quickly, without a doubt.

But on 18s you get ridiculously wide tyres. There's no fuss, no drama, no fighting the limits, it simply steers round anything at pretty much any speed.

And that's why I found mine boring. Not enough grunt to overcome the grip of the rears, so it just went like it was on rails. If that's what you're after then great, but it wasn't much fun.

I was in this position 2.5 years ago, went with the z3m coupe.
Love it as a good all round car (only 2 seats yes) but boot is practicle for stuff and a few cheeky mods like suspension make it handle very well.
Servicing isn't massive costs at a specialist and if you get a good example then your not likely to loose any £££ on resale. Check out z3mcoupe.com for buying guides, for sale etc smile

Interestingly people mention the Box is boring. I only had the E36 M3 & the Boxster S and it's the M3 that I seriously got bored of - great car and the engine but on a B road it can't really match the other one for fun factor. I can only guess Z3 would be at least a bit more fun than the M3...

Yes, But it wasnt FASTER in the bends either. An M3 could corner just as well.yes
That said, I did feel more confident in the Boxster. It doesnt matter anyway, as most are driven by image concious girls as it has a Porsche badge on, so will never be driven how they should be.

There was one being used properly on the Scottish Hoon last weekend. Impressed a few people by all accounts.

That's what i love about my daft Mr2, it surprises lots of folk. The BoxsterS is the next logical step up in build (only just in on the road performance).

Had a good nosey round a 2.2 z3 last weekend, the boot is a lot smaller than i thought it would be.

Boxster with a few upgrades on it might well make a better proposition.

Boxster is more capable, without a doubt, but the Z3M feels that bit more special. However, body flex on Z3s isn't great - puts me off them a bit. Boxsters feel much more rigid IMO.

Yes the boot is particularly small, very shallow. No spare wheel either, all the space is taken up by the quad exhaust system which does look very cool imo.

I had a Z3 M for around 6 months, the engine was the best part. Very smooth and very powerful, there isn't much around that price range with that level of performance.

Only got rid because I fancied a change and I didn't want to sink a lot of money in to it. Part-ex'd it for a Clio V6. smile
