The nicest looking pug for a long time (aside from the RCZ).

If we want it to be authentic Peugeot 80's like, let's hope it's metal is as thin as 80's school toilet paper, it's dash looks like it's out of a Trabant with the same level of build quality and breakdown every few weeks.

Not at £25k+ plus they're not
In the late 80s a 205 GTi 1.9 was about £13.5K IIRC

Roll forward 25 years and £25K is probably not greatly different is it?? Other cars have about doubled in price since then (although we had the heavy new car duty back then I think??)

James May hit the nail on the head recently - you can have more fun in a small car with narrow wheels. Big wheels may mean lots of grip, but it's just going to hurt more when the grip disappears or you run out of talent.
While you're right, Peugeot will not be aiming the 208 GTi at James May. They'll be aiming it at 17-24 yr olds.

Have you ever known a 17-24yr old to not want wider and bigger wheels?
Do you think a 17-24 year old will be able to afford the insurance for a 200 bhp hot hatch??? Not when they are being quoted premiums in the £1000's for 1.0 litre 10 year old Micras.

The reason cars are looking like this these days (all show and not so much go) is because there just isnt the space or freedom on the roads anymore to be able to exploit a good chassis, or low curb weight. All you can do these days is drive along in long ques of traffic, and try to look good at 5mph!!

Maybe not 17yr olds, you're absolutely right, but early 20 yr olds I imagine? Yes it's expensive, but haven't we all (as PHers) spent more money than we should on insurance? biggrin

Something tells me this will drive like a DS3 racing. No idea if that's a good or bad thing because I've never driven one, but I get the feeling they'll be basically the same car like the Saxo/106.

The Citroen DS3 is a bigger platform, more closely related to the 207.
The 208 is an all new platform, which will have more in common with the C2 replacement.

I really hope this is a good car. I want this to be a good car.

I have owned a 205 GTI for over 10 years, I have also owned a 405 MI16 and 106 and have driven plenty of 309s, 306s and 406s, (GTIs included) so I know how good Peugeot can be.

They may have lost their way in recent years, but let's hope Peugeot can pull something special out of the bag (although I'm not holding my breath frown)

What are Pininfarina doing these days?
Oddly similar-looking big-mouthed Ferraris.

Actually, that is a bit faecetious - they also do a superb job with Maserati.

As predicted(and it is heavier HDI)"Cornering grip levels are high; the 208 feels very stable and postpones final understeer until it is cornering extremely hard. The ESP, standard on every model, rarely intrudes." Autocar

Ok, fair point and I stand corrected.

Still, BHP per ton is less at 139 BHP.
35 bhp per ton less than the 208.
I think whole driving experience is key here. Speed is part of it but the 205 was so much more than just fast.

Remember Top Gear did a New Vs Old program and raced a mint 1.9 against a 206 180 and the newer car wiped its bottom with the 80s icon.

Doesn't really matter in the end.
