Coupe/3 door is never going to be as practical as 4/5 doors/estate though. Same goes for M3.

335i touring would be nice IMO. 550i touring?
Don't forget that you can get the M3 as a 4 door saloon!

In the RS6 Avant over the last week I've done the following:

A trip to the recycling centre, including:
- 2 wardrobes,
- assorted wooden planks
- 6 metal railings
- 2 tubs of garden waste
- 3 boxes of cardboard
- a bag of clothes for Humana
(- and a partridge in a pear tree)
All in a single carload.

Put my bike in the boot with both wheels attached, got to my cycling start point very quickly.

Went to a client's office 120 miles away with 3 suited colleagues, we all emerged at the other end feeling fresh and comfortable, and the car fitted in well with the client's executive car park.

Was late leaving for a meeting in Nottingham, got there half an hour early. wink

Last Sunday I did a PH hoon in rather soaking wet conditions.

I can't think of anything else more complete. (But a 4wd Maserati Quattroporte Wagon would be rather nice if they made one).

One car for the rest of my life ...

This on a limited budget of £10K -

Or this on a budget no option -

And before it's said I don't do off roading or bother going out when there's a foot of snow and if I had kids they can walk or get the bus. This is my fantasy and one car for the rest of eternity would be the car that puts the biggest smile on my face.

If you can live with 2 seats my Cayman S PDK is a pretty good all rounder, great on track (unlike BMW and Mercs), good in traffic, plenty of boot space and the dog goes in the back

I had no idea that an accord type R ticked the "looks good" box.

It may do alot of things very well but it looks really dull and boring.
In your opinion maybe, I personally find E39's a bit dull looking in comparison.

Always thought the ATR had aged very well, has a little look of Evo 7 to it I think..

it's not quite special enough. i loved the one i had (e60) but it was a little too dull, and the fact an e61 m5 exists makes it hard to pick the 535d over that.

I'm going to go left of centre. Holden Maloo. or Vauxhall VXR8 (if you have kids).

Fast, Plenty of space to chuck your stuff in. Easily tunable if you get bored and relatively simple mechanicals (with proven reliability) so you won't be holding your breath for a warning light to appear on the dashboard.

actually, i started a thread a week ago asking "are two cars always better than one?".

i think this thread, in a way, proves that they are.

But in a thread of "complete" cars, it's not got the luggage space.

I'd probably lean towards something like an Impreza. Good looking, nice place to sit (at least, post 2000-), can carry passengers with a bootful of luggage, comfortable when pootling along and brilliant fun when pressing on. Not only that, but they are unbeatable in all weathers, whereas something like an M3 will be sitting forlornly on the drive in heavy snow.

I considered a Lancer Evolution as well, but the Subaru won out because they are easier and cheaper to run day to day.

How not? They have a decent size boot, I did a few airport runs with mine and it was fine.

Subaru legacy.

Reliable - cheap - not bad looking - spacious - easy to drive - performs ok - capable off road.

It's great saying an rs6 or m3 but could you chuck a haybale in the back and drive across a field? Yes the Subaru wouldn't see which way the other cars went in a race but surely complete means capable of pretty much everything a car can do.
