I know these things are subjective, but for me it's an Allroad 3.0 TDI. Quick, discreet, spacious, handles reasonably well, economical, well-equipped and will get me to my favourite ski resorts come what may. If I had to have a one-car garage, this would be it.

Regularly use it on a 550mile run from London to Aberdeen. I can either do 70mph and get there in 1 tank of fuel (30+mpg), alternatively I have been known to use 2 tanks of fuel for the same journey.
Sensible speeds it is very good fuel economy for a heavy car with the aerodynamics of a brick.
Yes, but that's an oil burner and not the fast/fun one. smile

03 - 05 Impreza WRX Wagon.

Not in the super rip off tax bracket
Insurance group 17
25 - 30 MPG average(ish)
AWD
Extremely reliable
5 seats + Big boot
Reasonably well equipped interior
That sound

In second place - Audi RS4.

I have to assume you mean proven to not be very reliable wink Just going by the opinion of mechanics I know that have to work on the things!

If off roading needs to be considered then the only option is a supercharged range rover surely? (if uglyness isnt a factor then perhaps a Cayenne Turbo). An m5 would probably struggle on damp grass!

I can't help but think the Legacy wagon does all of that, but better. And without an image problem.

It's sound basic logic. If you look back at the OP's post, the only slight failing the Accord has is possibly in the looks dept., otherwise it fits the bill 100%. One hell of a car for £2-5k imo.

my (admittedly limited) experience with them has been they are just average at all the things you list rather than being great.

Aren't they a tad big for B-road antics? And the image thing is your problem, not the car's.

I had a couple of 4-door Imprezas which were great fun but a little too small to be truly practical all-rounders.

I then had an E39 M5 which was fantastic except for tip-runs and snow (although winter tyres might have helped with the latter).

So I've come to the conclusion (like some others already posted) that the answer to the OP's question is an RS6 Avant - buy the best one you can afford!

PS Or an ML 63 AMG, if you prefer that sort of thing...

What about a school run or a tip trip? I don't see how sports cars or supercars can be classified. They are unique and only serve a couple of purposes - to enjoy driving or to pose/show status!
I used to do the weekly shopping in the Sagaris. I took it to the tip. Transported the cats to the vets. Used it as a delivery van when I did leaflet and catalogue drops.

I moved house with just an Mx5.

I find things with 4 doors and 4 seats far more compromised cars. They have 2 seats too many, 2 ft too much in the car length and way the best part of 400Kgs too much when 75% of their interior space is wasted 80% of the time. That to me is incredibly inefficient and compromised.

For the purpose of this discussion I would say probably the RS4 Avant. Its got 90% of the pace of the RS6, 95% of the time, £10k cheaper to buy and with lower running costs.

Not at all; certainly the one I drove felt smaller than my Mk2 Focus. I prefer the steering feel of the Impreza, but the interior of the Legacy is a much nicer place to sit IMO.

Fair enough - but if I wanted the complete car, I would want a car that I could equally take to a posh country club, and leave on the back streets of London, and it would not draw any undue attention in either case. I think the Legacy works better in this regard, but that's my opinion.

I agree with a lot of that. I very rarely use the rear seats in a car, so what I really need is a two seater with a large loading area behind (Megane R26R, perhaps?)

But there are some things you can't do with a sports car. Unless you have a Chimaera-sized boot it's impossible to get a barritone sax case in a sports car, I've discovered. And the same goes for mountain bikes. It's a real pain, because I'd have an MR2 or MX5 as a daily driver in a flash otherwise.

Oh hello fellow bari sax player.

That and work reasons dictate a more practical car for me.

Mine was full of junk yesterday morning for the car boot sale, sat watching tv in it waiting for the gates to open at 6am. Sold all the junk and made £300 then a nice fast blast home afterwards.

Sorted!
