Honestly, Im going to try to buy wise here. Find one with a recent cambelt-change, functioning electrics...

I dont mind the non-S 4.5 actually. I think it could be a very relaxing drive smile
Slow? Its a coupe with a 4.5 litre V8 ffs ! hehe

I also read they benefit from a bit of mods, new free-flowing exhaust and cams/headers.

Question: Is the Auto decent?

Mercedes sourced, better to get a 1984 or later car which has a four speed rather than the earlier 3 speed version.

Not slow, just less fast than the other 928's and modern stuff, when new, 0-60 in six and a bit, 146 mph, about the same as my Saab 9-3 Aero with a remap, similar weight, brisk but not super fast. 21 Mpg sounds optimistic as my S2 doesnt do that much more knocking about than that and that is only half a 928 engine.

The other day, pedalling about on my bike, I was thinking to myself "I haven't seen a 928 on the road in ages"

NOT FIVE MINUTES LATER one came the other way.

And then this thread appears ?

Witchcraft.

None of them are that fast in the scheme of things these days, 320D would probably give my S2 a run for its money and a 335D would probably have enough pace to worry most 928's, so really if you are after ultimate pace for not a lot of money avoid like the plaugue.
The quoted 0-60 on the 928 S2 is 6.4 seconds; the 320D is 8 seconds, so it'd have to be a pretty poorly S2 to get dusted by a cooking Beemer.

In its day, 928's were just about the most powerful road cars out there, certainly in automatic trim. I know time has moved on 25 years, but they are still genuinely quick if no longer devastatingly rapid (when put up against a modern AMG Merc for example).

Isnt 0-62 mph one thing, but the grunt from 50-100 something that to a larger degree reflects on its pace? Older cars were always a bit sluggish off the line...?

Was talking about the 944 S2 really, it pulls quite well but was thinking a 320D would be pretty much as quick.

For sport allow the 320D to come past you in the run up to a roundabout and then gently drive around the outside of them on the roundabout...they don't tend to want to look at you when they eventually come past again....

My Wife has a 535D and whilst quick is not that much quicker than the 944T

Probably not far off but I reckon it would need to be a 325d to properly keep up/pass one.

A healthy 335d is sub 6s to 60 and a whisker over 13s to 100. I don't know the figures (even though my dad owned one!) but surely an S4 would blow that away?! Even a base spec non S should show it a thing or two. While 335ds are quick, one has to be realistic!

Probably wouldn't, but in the S4 you are driving an 80s apex predator porker. In the Beema you jus look well fas, innit blud

944S2 gives a 0-60 of 6.0 (quicker than the 928S2, to my slight surprise.)

Admittedly 0-60 only tells a very small part of the story, but I'd be upset if a 320D was quicker than a 944S2 (all other things being equal, natch).

On a GT car, imo it tells you nothing, especially on a modern classic too.
