What differs (apart from the obvious) between an M3 and a Cooking E30 ?
Could a reasonable approximation be done using a stock E30, I am thinking that the six cylinder engine was probably heavier and that was part of the magic, it being a revvy 4 cyl, if you couldnt fine an M3 engine, what would be the nearest approximation, S2000 Engine ?
The only parts that are the same are:Could a reasonable approximation be done using a stock E30, I am thinking that the six cylinder engine was probably heavier and that was part of the magic, it being a revvy 4 cyl, if you couldnt fine an M3 engine, what would be the nearest approximation, S2000 Engine ?
The bonnet skin
The front panel, grille and headlights
The sunroof panel and cassette (if fitted)
The dashboard and interior trim (except for the rear seat and front seats on M3 are at least sports seats)
Front side windows and motors/winders
Rear trailing arms (same as other disc-braked cars)
To make a (LHD, 2dr) standard car an approximation for an M3 you would need:
Engine with all ancilliaries, exhaust and gearbox
Diff, driveshafts, propshaft, suspension (inc struts, a/r bars, dampers and springs and bushes) and brakes including master cylinder and hubs, steering rack and 5 stud roadwheels.
New or modified roof skin, cap, front and rear wings/panels, bootlid front and rear bumpers and inners, spoilers, modified or new door skins.
M3 rear seat and check control panel
Front and rear screens.
It's a lot of work!
The engine isn't the hardest bit to find, but may well be the most expensive!
Oh...
For the Merc lovers the E30 M3 was available with SLS called the Nurburgring pack...most have had it replaced with standard stuff now as replacement SLS dampers are circa £1k per corner!
I have a 1987 D plate 2.3 car...Not perfect but no rotbox either. I paid a shade under £4k in 2005 but the engine was down on power and ran a bearing on a trackday resulting in a >£3.5k rebuild/upgrade. I've also spent another £1k ish on suspension and brake upgrades and the car gets some track use...It is where it is at it's best and where I can enjoy the handling and performance without fear of loosing my licence.

I am sorry but that is a stupidly ridiculous amount of money for an old Beemer! That's another one off the road and sat in a museum too, what a shame.
It's hardly seen the road in the last 22years, so business as usual really.s m said:

If I won the euro lotto, I would buy up as many of these "precious" collectors cars as I could and then post videos of me spanking them to within an inch of their lives on track, just to prove a point.

Here's a question for you E30 afficionados-
Would an E30 325 with uprated brakes and suspension give an M3 of the same a run for its money on the twisties? Surely from an ownership point of view the 6 cylinder 325 would be a nicer engine to work with and listen to at the very least?
It's a cheaper engine to work with, m3 engine bits are pricey to say the least. As for keeping up, I think that would be more down to the drivers abilities than the cars.Would an E30 325 with uprated brakes and suspension give an M3 of the same a run for its money on the twisties? I have a std e30 325 that I use every day and it drives like a bus compared to the m3. Slower and more prone to understeer. Steering is dead in comparison......still prefer it to a e36 though.
They put wide arches on the 325i etc etc.
IIRC the M3 was still felt to be the better driver's car.
I'll scan it in later
( Interestingly both cars were in FASHIONABLE WHITE! )

He he. While the current mileage is admittedly very low, it's still averaged about 2200 miles per year so far. I could be wrong and I really hope I am but I suspect the next owner will be putting the sum total of 0 miles on it for the forseeable future.
It's done 18600miles according to the ad on ebay, it's 22years old or thereabouts, I make that about 800p/a averaged out, although would guess that most of the 18.6k was done in it's earlier life.E30M3SE said:

All I can say is what a waste!

I did wonder why it had crept up to 85,100......and then back down again.
Some behind the scenes shenanigans going on there....
Anyway, hat? Pork Pie?
