What car, 4k - quickish, comfortable and nice interior.

Yes - But if the big ends go (and they're know to) you're looking at huge bills as IIRC requires a new block (if you can get one)Great cars though. I'd look for an early 330 or Saab 9-3 depending on what you want. I've had them all and am now in a 9-3 which is for keeps.

That is very nice but seems to be 3k cheaper than any other so doubt it will still be for sale when I have sold both my cars - Or at least the S2000 so I have money to buy a new car. The Passat might just get scrapped. What about paying a lot less and paying for the fuel. saw a very clean W reg 7 series the other night and thought it looked a lot more than it probably cost.
I had a quick gander in the ads and found this 83hp 8 litre car (sic) with no service history (though VOSA seem to validate mileage)for £1300 but you get the idea...if it breaks, throw it away, chances are you'll get your money's worth.

Sooooooo, need a run around for a year or so. Downgrading from a Passat TDI and an s2000 to one car.
So criteria -
- 4/5 seats
- Nicely specced interior
- Cheap/easy to fix as a home mechanic
- £4k max, would prefer £3k
- Quickish and a nice drive.
- Fuel economy above 20mpg.
I'm short on ideas, the Octavia Mk1 VRS is the only thing I can think of but it's just not quite quick enough at 7.7secs 0-60. So can I get all teh above and 6.5ish 0-60.

Get over the image OP and have a look at one. Your far more likely to find a loved example at this money, than you are a looked after M3 or similar.
Saab 9-5 Aero also worth a look, but interior not as modern or nice.
Can't believe that people are putting forward a Mundeo!

I have my first SAAB (9-5 Aero MY02) and it is great to drive - was looking at swapping it not so long ago, but nothing else has the spec, speed, newish age and economy all in one package.
Real world economy is great for the size and power, (25-35mpg depending on driving, but average over 30 for my work journey) so comfy.... even in the twisties it is sure footed and really hangs on well...
The 0-60 is claimed at 6.5 seconds, but to be honest, second gear is all you ever need to go from almost stationary to 65-70mph as 1st is gone in the blink of an eye! It is easily capable of the claimed figure!
Try one and see what you think - The boot is cavernous, I have a 10 month old little girl and we easily get everything for a weekend away in it...

The SAAB autos have manual option on the steering wheel - but in Aero guise are still 1.5 second to 60 slower than a manual...- 4/5 seats Check

The E36 is not that dynamic, I've already had an M3 - and although it handles good, the steering feel is so st it's unbelievabe. Is the steering improved on the E46?

A few posts ago you were asking if you could pick one up within budget and whether they were expensive to run or not.
Now you're claiming you've owned an M3?
Make up your mind.

Steering felt crap to me but I had just come from an Integra. I had one about 5 years ago and paid 9k for it so I had no idea if you can get one for 4k. And as mine never went wrong and at 21 you don't ever consider the possibilty of it going wrong I wondered what likely costs I might accrue. But I've just remembered parts are expensive and there's always the Vanos in the back of your mind.A few posts ago you were asking if you could pick one up within budget and whether they were expensive to run or not.

I'd say the e46 330i is the embodiment of the poster's stated requirements being both quick enough to overtake most vehicles with ease, extremely comfortable (although less so in the back as the suspension is quite stiff) and most are sold with a bloody nice interior that is solidly built. I am of course biased but I'm quite taken with mine...until I inevitably need some M power back in my life.
