Have to agree with an E46 330.

Showing my bias again, but I'd suggest a Volvo of some sort: T5 if you want the grunt. A C70, V70 or S60, p'haps. From an ergonomics POV, the best and most comfortable seats/interiors you'll ever use, good build quality and in T5 trim, quick enough.
They're reasonably easy to work on, parts seem cheap and are readily available. smile

Audi S4, less than 4k, very quick, very practical, lovely interiors in either alcantara or leather.
Ridiculously bonkers running costs, mind.
Compared to E39 540i and S type V8s of similar or older vintage I struggle to believe this especially knowing a few guys who use S4s as track cars which have proven rather reliable.

Altezza RS200? 210bhp, rwd, the RS model comes with a diff as standard and they rev to 8k near enough. Never had a problem with mine! You can even track one down with the TRD body kit within budget.

Fair enough, cheers for clearing that up.

Personally I would stay away from the M3 if you're after low running costs.

S-Type 4.2 V8
S-Type 3.0 V6
Saab 9-5 HOT Aero
Saab 9-3 Aero
E46 330

I'm in a similar position to you at the minute and I'm looking at the above.
But surely both the S Types will be as expensive to run as the M3.

Reliable and track is probably a bit of a misnomer though. I really like the bi-turbo S4, so much so I seriously started looking at them. Doing some research on them they do appear to be great cars, although reliability and running costs didn't seem to be their strongest suits.

I think to do pretty much anything on the engine requires you to take the front of the car off. Not such an issue if you are doing it yourself, but costly if you are paying by the hour.

In terms of what?

General servicing and maintenance/repair costs should be much less than an 'M' car. Both the 3.0 V6 and the 4.2 V8 are known as being pretty tough blocks.

Jags and Volvos are a bit old man - I'm 26. Will save them for later.
I'm 19 and just picked up this:

S60 at Donington 1 by jlewisbarned, on Flickr

...for less than 3 of these...

0-60 in 6.6 seconds and about as comfortable as it gets on four wheels.

I'm not suprised, most 19 year olds i know wear jumpers like my dad used to wear, so driving a Volvo must fit in quite well. wink

You will not find a decent 330Ci for 4 grand without a substantial mileage.

325/328 sure.

How about a Nissan 200SX
Quick acceleration
Relatively smooth runner
Relatively reliable.
Not sure what the mpg is on one of these.

What about a V6 Alfa?

Mine is worth only half your budget, but it is a lovely old thing.

Not particularly swift, with only 195bhp, but the interior is comfortable and stylish.

If you could stretch your four grand a little then you might get a leggy GTA, complete with 250bhp, dodgy bodykit and lots of torquesteer.
