Showing my bias again, but I'd suggest a Volvo of some sort: T5 if you want the grunt. A C70, V70 or S60, p'haps. From an ergonomics POV, the best and most comfortable seats/interiors you'll ever use, good build quality and in T5 trim, quick enough.
They're reasonably easy to work on, parts seem cheap and are readily available.

Altezza RS200? 210bhp, rwd, the RS model comes with a diff as standard and they rev to 8k near enough. Never had a problem with mine! You can even track one down with the TRD body kit within budget.

I'm in a similar position to you at the minute and I'm looking at the above.
But surely both the S Types will be as expensive to run as the M3.Personally I would stay away from the M3 if you're after low running costs.

Reliable and track is probably a bit of a misnomer though. I really like the bi-turbo S4, so much so I seriously started looking at them. Doing some research on them they do appear to be great cars, although reliability and running costs didn't seem to be their strongest suits. I think to do pretty much anything on the engine requires you to take the front of the car off. Not such an issue if you are doing it yourself, but costly if you are paying by the hour.

0-60 in 6.6 seconds and about as comfortable as it gets on four wheels.

What about a V6 Alfa?
Mine is worth only half your budget, but it is a lovely old thing.
Not particularly swift, with only 195bhp, but the interior is comfortable and stylish.
If you could stretch your four grand a little then you might get a leggy GTA, complete with 250bhp, dodgy bodykit and lots of torquesteer.
