You post was going so well until that final remark. I saw the new Boxster 981 at Le Mans Classic a couple of weeks ago, parked up in the club area with literally hundreds of other Porsches. Everyone, to a fault, said how good it looked compared to the previous model it was lined up with.

Moving on, you say we should buy British so suggest to me the British sports car you would consider comparable to the Boxster?

Interior much improved, agree with that, although I never minded the simplicity of the previous, nor ever wished it was a more luxurious car when driving it.

But the exterior was a definite step backwards. I thought the MR2 likeness was a bit of ph banter before seeing it but yes, it really does look like one!

The previous car had a fairly paired back look to the general curves. This one has much more 'volume' about it, especially at the nose (is this euro legislation nonsense?). Where the previous car took cues from the Carrera GT, this one appears to have grown a likeness to the unequivocally foul Panamera. Anything that reminds me of that eyesore could never said to be in any way good looking. I'm no fan of porsches generally and wish you would all at least try british cars before lining german wallets, but acknowledge that the boxster/cayman is a fundamentally decent car and understand why they are so popular but I was really disappointed by the styling, especially after all I had read.

Anyone who thinks it's better looking than the previous car should get their eyes tested.
Believe it or not, some people think the Panamera rather natty, for what it is... looks are subjective don't cha know.

I apologise in advance, because I really, really, really hate it when people do this, but since the spectre of the used 911 is always raised when the cost of a new Evora is mentioned, I think it's only fair to point out that I would find it very hard to walk past this to drop 36k on a poverty spec Boxster.

(actually, for the same money I'd rather have a new Elise S than a base Boxster, but I recognise that's because I'm an Elise kind of guy and not a Boxster kind of guy, and that for most people the two would not really be alternatives)

Why apologise it's at least a suggestion. I know the Elise well, my daughter had one for a few years. My view of it was that while fun it was too raw and basic for anything other than a weekend fun car. It's totally different from the Boxster. Looks like the roof doesn't come off the Evora so not comparable.

Have had my eyes tested and you were correct I needed prescription glasses. Now with 20/20 vision I can say that the new Boxster is commensurately more beautiful than any previous.

Cheers for the heads up.

That's what I was getting at about people wanting different things - I'd have had an Exige if I'd been able to get one in budget, so the roof off thing isn't all that important to me (and I'd probably take a Cayman over a Boxster). Porsches are superb at doubling as daily drivers, but actually some of the stuff that puts people off using Elises for that is the same stuff that to me makes them feel special. So, for instance, a cabin that wouldn't raise eyebrows if it were implanted in a high end Audi saloon is not actually a plus point for me for what I use my car for, and likewise the levels of refinement and equipment available.

If I did want something more civilised and - for want of a better word, it's not quite what I mean - conventional, then that used Evora would be more my cup of tea.

All valid points in your case, but i) I've got lots of other cars and ii) I was really responding to Pits suggestion that we buy British. One can't get more British than TVR, Aston Martin and Austin Healey but for my wife, who enjoys driving spritedly with the roof off but needs something a tad more practical than an Elise (she is 57 after all) there's nothing...

p.s. She's expressed an interest in the new Jag F Type, if it happens and is a small as the concept suggests. smile

No, there isn't much choice for that part of the Boxster market, I agree. Well, not from the UK, anyway, several other German options.
