Performance VS Economy

Is it possible to have a car that delivers the best of these 2 worlds?
A bit like the old, cook in the kitchen/we in the bedroom quote from Jerry Hall.
I had a 525d touring that was great had a nice punch but good fuel as well.
In these days of stupid fuel costs surely its prudent to look at something that offers more smiles per miles (sorry soo bad)
Something like the BMW 123d Coupe gets a great review, 50-60mpg and twin turbo motor.
Needs to be able to fit 4 adults, return 40+ combined and go like stink when you want it to.
Suggestions?

With BMW diesels I've decided a good rule of thumb is to pretend the 'Extra Urban' figure doesnt exist, that 'Combined' is actually the true 'Extra Urban' figure and that the 'Urban' Figure is really 'Combined'.
If that makes sense. I'm not a particularly aggresive driver and have no real trouble acheiving the quoted figures on most cars I drive - especially petrol BMW's - but any diesel BMW made in the last 5 years or so I just can't get ANYWHERE near the quoted figures.

Everything's a compromise, and the compromise depends how much importance you put on either aspect. Sorry, that sounds too sensible a post for PH!
At the time I used to think my previous car - a Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI - had a good balance: 158bhp, 245lb ft, 0-62 ~7sec and 45mpg in my hands (official 50mpg). But it just wasn't outright fun to drive, it didn't ever inspire me to go out for a drive just for the hell of it. It WAS quick though, but quick =/= fun.

For anyone with even a sniff of petrol in their veins, more smiles per mile comes from driving a car that's quick and fun to drive. Smugly watching the numbers on the trip computer might bring great pleasure to some, but they shouldn't be signed up to PistonHeads IMO.Mr2Mike said:

If you see my user name you will get the idea that its not MPG that floats my boat, however second cars and ones for the lovely future Mrs G to drive are are different thing. She is a speedy lady with an eye on the bank, thats why she is a keeper!Friend has a 123d and i have a 330ci (E46) the 123d is great for a diesel but as others have said you will struggle to get the quoted fuel figures, and although its actually pretty nippy and does pull well through the rev range it does'nt have the outright pace mine does. which is why i suggest the 130i...
i get 35mpg, i hear the lci 130 can get up to 40mpg! also 265bhp against my 231bhp and i understand about 80kg lighter in a car that handles better (ditch the run flats though) well worth considering

a5 coupe 3.0td 4x4? i believe the 0-60 is under 6 and good for 155mph? id assume it must be 40mpg or there abouts.
The stats on these are awesome (from Autotrader anyway), 5.9 to 60, limited to 155MPH, 240bhp & 369lbs/ft, with a claimed 32/42/53MPG.It's............ attractive. On paper at least. Are there owners out there who can confirm/ deny?

I presume they will be quite pricey though.....so you could get an older 130i/330i which will match that performance for a bit less mpg but less buy-in price......choices, choices.
I test drove a 3.0 TDI Quattro A5 before I bought a 3 Series Coupe. I was hugely underwhelmed. I can only imagine the 0-60 time comes from the off the line advantage Quattro gives the car when being hammered to death by a test driver because it felt nothing like a 0-60 in 5.9 second car. It just felt like an A4 diesel with less doors. I was also amazed by things like visibly worn buttons and a squeeky armrest on a 30k mile Audi Approved Car.
Frankly I just didn't see what the fuss was about. Curiously all the Salesman could really talk about was how it had LED DRL's. I guess thats why you buy an Audi these days - for the bling.

IMO a load of tosh. I can get the combined cycle figure on my commute, 22miles about 50% motorway in rush hour. I've been getting low-mid 40's recently but I'm crusing at above a leptop when possible...If that makes sense. If you can get the combined cycle figures on petrol and not diesel cars, I'd suggest your driving the diesels wrong (too high revs, not shifting up at the right time etc...)
