I'd like to hear what you guys think of the above cars.
I need to replace my work beater shortly which is a C30 D5
But with petrol prices a lot lower than diesel now it is working out cheaper to buy a petrol car this time round! smile
I wil do ~25k miles/year in it for 3 years
It will mainly be M way with A&B road blasts where I can wink
It will be on customers sites so needs to "blend in"
It needs to be reliable
And most of all must be a good drive!
We tend to buy 6-12 month old cars rather than new.
If you can think of any better alternatives post them up!

Beater

  • looks at list of cars**
Beater..... are you sure thats what you meant?

I dont think any of those cars can be classed as a beater.

Having said that, one of the VAG R cars would be my choice.

New 328i would give you better performance than most of those and much better MPG

Scirocco R very time for me. They look sensational and go great. I saw one the other day with the panoramic roof and pearl blue paint over caramel leather-a perfect compromise between the working week and the weekend blast

I did consider a 335i and S4 but I'm not too keen on Audi & BMW
I'm lucky enough to have this as weekend car so need something to keep me going during the week wink
It won't get the love & attention the S does

Insignia VXR. Much more rare than all the other cars on the list. Sound rather nice too.

Can't believe the Polo has no votes so far, all the middle aged Mums must be at Bridge Club today!

That was my thoughts on it as well. I like the "stealth" of it.
Seems to get some half decent reviews as well.
Interior is a bit plastic but it is well loaded.

I suppose it'd be the Golf R if I had to choose something in that market, but none of them are particularly inspiring.

ETA: Would the Toyota GT86 be a viable alternative, or is that not "white goods" enough looking for customer sites?

I put it in as a bit of a curved ball
Does 47 mpg with 180 BHP the turbo and supercharged 1.4 engine worries me slightly confused

I'd agree with that but inspiring usually means too in your face and brings out the greened eyed monster frown
Hence why the Aston NEVER goes near customers wink

He's going to be using it every day and doing 25k miles a year, to him it's a beater. Who cares?

I'd go with the Insignia, it's rare, spacious, looks rather nice and by all accounts goes pretty well. More interesting than a golf/VAG car imo smile

ETA I do like the look of the GT86/BRZ. We do tend to buy 6-12 month old cars to reduce the depreciation and I'm not sure how that shape would go down with customers frown

Ironically I did consider a specced up Discovery Commercial as I could get a load of tax back on it as a van laugh
Only do diesels though and they really drink it frown

Golf R and a map or an S3 & a map?

Good fun either way, not my idea of a beater, yet :P

LOADS of cars for the budget, what about an older S4?

Some form of 3 series gets my vote. Much more comfortable than a family hatch for doing big(ish) miles...
