Can't believe the Polo has no votes so far, all the middle aged Mums must be at Bridge Club today!
I put it in as a bit of a curved ball
Does 47 mpg with 180 BHP the turbo and supercharged 1.4 engine worries me slightly

Golf R and a map or an S3 & a map?
Good fun either way, not my idea of a beater, yet :P
LOADS of cars for the budget, what about an older S4?
I'm sure I'll end up messing with what ever I get Good fun either way, not my idea of a beater, yet :P

I'd love an RS4 avant but there are no decent low milers around
S4 avant might be an option

Some form of 3 series gets my vote. Much more comfortable than a family hatch for doing big(ish) miles...
I had a 330d M Sport a while back and was not that impressed with it, especially after blowing its gear box up It really needs to be able to load some big boxes now and again so saloons are out.
I had the same debate back in 2004 with roughly the same criteria (though sadly without the Aston)
I ended up going for the Impreza as it provided by far the best bang for the buck and was practical and discreet enough for business purposes... hence that's my vote.
And whoever said the Scirocco was a good looking car really needs to go to Specsavers!

Says the guy who bought an Impreza...And whoever said the Scirocco was a good looking car really needs to go to Specsavers!
Just shows you how subjective styling is.

The looks of the Scirocco are a bit the R body kit is better, I didn't consider a none R car because of that.

What a lovely place to be in.
Serious and not piss taking.
Although when such cars (and amount of money) are waved about as just a "beater", it is slightly insulting to those with less money and opportunities.
Believe me I do understand that.Serious and not piss taking.

The business is doing well and I am very fortunate to be able to indulge a passion.

Well evidently more than one person if you read the replies in this thread.
More fool them then.Beater Definition
A car used for daily transport to avoid damage or wear on a nicer car.
Seems to fit the definition well to me. He didn't say stter or snotter (implying that it's cheap crap to him), it's just a daily car that's going to get some abuse. Hundreds of others on this site run similar (or much better) and would describe them in much the same way, take the chip off your shoulder
