Who gets company cars?
Discussion
on my next promotion i'll get either a fully funded car [landcruiser type 4x4, insured and fuelled] or a car allowance. if you take the allowance, you don't get the fuel card but also don't have to actually buy a car with it. all tax free as well.
it's purely seniority based. also all married expats automatically get the car allowance as it is deemed necessary.

I am in construction consultancy, and have been (although in slightly different fields) for the last 10 years. I have had company cars for the last 8 years. I travel all across the UK for work so need a company vehicle.
You will find that most sales/business development people will have one, as well as consultants and field personel.
Perhaps I am used to it, but company cars for 8 years means that I can't even contemplate running a daily out of my own pocket.

this thing about BIK is bks. The percentage of your wage pay as co car tax depends on the car emissions etc. The amount of tax you pay is therefore a function of that and the amount you earn. Tax threshold has no effect and anybody saying it does needs to have a read up.
Are you pissed or something? This stuff is hard enough for some people to get their heads around without you posting crap. If you don't understand something then it's probably best to leave it alone. From HMRC's car benefit calculator:
"In order to calculate the tax due on company car benefit and company car fuel benefit, the amounts calculated above need to be applied to an employee's other income and tax information.
Without additional information it is not possible to give the actual amounts of tax liability,..."
I work for a company with about 6000 employees and noone at all has a company car. We also don't have many sales people due to the nature of the business and don't have lots of sites. The little bit of traveling that people do is either train or hire car or, more often, taxi and plane (there is allot of overseas travel by some departments).
I've got a company car and a fuel card, I do minimal business miles, but I have a ~100mile round trip commute due to a department office move 4yrs ago.
The tax on the car (1.9PD Octavia) and fuel card for private use is for me ~1200/yr. Total no brainer for me. I've never run a car for less than that - even a boring one- ever, even before putting fuel in it!

But you've not factored in any money the company would give you instead of the carMatt UK said:

Since 14th July (when I started adding cost/litre to my OCD spreadsheet [it's got graphs and everything! ) I have used 2700 worth of fuel, had two pairs of tyres, a windscreen, a cambelt service and last week a wingmirror (273!! fitted - bloody pheasant!)...At 3yrs 4 months old its just ticked over 98k, would have been more but it sat in a workshop for 3 months after someone spun me into a lorry.I can't see them paying me enough to cover that lot TBH.
Remember my 100 mile commute to my main place of work is classed as private mileage by HMRC.
Now, if I could have a fuel card for a private car however....
I didn't have a company car before the office move, and without posting all details I think I have done OK. This also skews the money side of things somewhat

A friend works for a large German car brand and gets brand new company car every 6 months. He is only in a junior role so gets limited on what he can choose, but still not bad.
All he has to do is put fuel in it.
This is very true, I work for BMW UK as a valeter and I also get a brand new BMW every 6 months, my limit is a 325 or 525, and we get to choose spec, colour etcAll he has to do is put fuel in it.

FWIW I just looked back at my old spreadsheet for my last cc (A4 Tdi) over 85,000 miles in 3 years it cost 10,330. But as I don't have a fuel card it gets filled with the cheapest diesel I can find (usually local Asda) and it got 44mpg over that period.
Same 1.9 engine I guess? Average is 44-46, it will do 50 if I drive like those irritating people who usually get in my way Since I started, fuel around here has gone up by quite a bit:
Wish I had noted the cost from the start, would make a scary graph..
You can see the Motorway services fill ups at Christmas and one the other week! Usually its the local Sainsbury's. I do try not to take the piss!

No, it was the very briefly sold 2.0 120PS version, worse C02 than it's replacement a 320d and only 2/3rds the power. It was however a comfortable car for a motorway journey. I never got more than 48 mpg even driving like a saint, but so far (only 3,000 miles) I'm averaging 48mpg out of the 320d not hanging about.
