Gordon Brown's envy taxes changed the car fleet industry during the 90s. It used to be advantageous to get a car, then he over-taxed that, so it became better to have the car allowance.

My company don't give out company cars except to senior managers as part of their salary package. I think there is a cash alternative as well.

It must be an amazing step to take up to take from the top of the middle management to the bottom of senior as the basic salary is a decent chunk higher, the bonus scheme is completely different (and a lot more generous) and you get a car. One day...

I did get offered a job once that came with a company car.

A base spec Diesel megane that was compulsory and no cash alternative. I didn't take the job.

People who have to take a company car because they do a lot of company miles should not be taxed on them. People who get them as a perk should. It was a way of paying people more money and avoiding the tax.

Insurance company. All managers get the option of a car or cash in lieu. If you take the cash option and do business mileage you can only get the company car level of reimbursement for petrol etc. More junior people who travel (salesmen essentially) get a tool-of-trade car. TOTs are generally diesel Astras etc. If you're a manager you have whatever you like up to the allowance (which goes through a lease company) except convertibles, people carriers and "small coupes". So no Audi TTs, but you you can have a CLK.
Everybody used to take the car, now more are taking cash. If you time it right, there can be some really excellent bits of kit available. I've got an XC90, but one of my colleagues on a similar grade schleps about in a very high spec XF. The leasing costs on Audis seem very high, so you tend to see more Mercs and BMs in the "fleet".

I reckon it is mainly people in teh motor trade now that run company cars, I was lucky enough to run Boxsters for a few years with a new one every 6 months and before that Defenders but now in an A3 Sportback 2.0Tdi DSG Black Edition, small car with worlds longest title, not a bad motor though, always had fuel too but I do about 25k a year so need it.

If you take an "eco" car, the tax isn't all that bad.

For me it's about 43 a month/520 a year. Could I buy and run a brand new car for that myself? Impossible!

Used to have the option of a heavily subsidised car (until March 2010 I was paying about 45/month for a 20k diesel hatchback) but over the year the subsidy got less and less, to the point where "due to poor take up, the lease car scheme will be terminated". We were then given 2800/yr to fund our own cars and our lease cars were collected.

To add insult to injury, this allowance is being removed in April, and we will receive no allowance, but an enhanced mileage rate of 45p/mile, oh joy.

Oh, and from June we will be deducted 250pa for the privilege of being allowed to park at work (in a public multi-storey 5 mins from the office, no less).

Yet it remains in our contracts that we have to have a car available at work for work purposes at all times. I'm feeling pretty shafted at the mo!

Every job I've had has come with a company car, and all my colleagues in different roles have them to, infact I know very few people that dont have one. Anyone I know with a job that isn't office based has one, allowances are few and far between.

The roles are a mixture of operations managers, project managers, installation managers, project coordinators, site managers, HSE managers, fraud investigators, QSs.

It's pretty much free choice, so you have people in cheap passat estates and 1 series like mine, upto range rover vogues and S class Mercedes.

I do 35k to 40k a year, so a car I don't have to maintain, fix or pay fuel on is a no brainier.

Im an Account Manager and we have the choice of company car or allowance (once you have been with the company for a certain length of time you can take the allowance). The company cars aren't particularly wonderful, it's either an Astra 1.3D Exclusiv or an Insignia 2.0D Exclusiv. You can choose your colour but that's all.

I get one, usually whatever is on the demo fleet. Have had literally dozens over the years. Regularly get to work to find someone`s sold it and off it goes. I then spend the day rooting around for something to go home in. I only really use it for work, long trips up north or family holidays. Rest of the time I use one of my toys.

We havealways use the co car / cash allowance to the advantage of the company as in it's cheaper to have a lower base plus the car rather than a higher base and no car.
Why?

No bonus on co car /cash for car
It's not pensionable pay
No employers National insurance
The employee looks at the total package adds that onto base think they get a higher salary than they really do
Co car or cash for car is an appealing draw to candidates

Anyway in the Finance world once you qualify as an accountant you get to the mgr grade regardless of all the ocnoanies I've worked for and that may mean same job as previously but suddenly comp car or cash allowance plus bonus grade.

In all the time I've had the option for a co car I've always taken the cash. Why firstly already had a car so disposing of it would lose me a lot secondly the car lists in most places I've worked in are restricted and I could choose to buy used three years old a vastly better car or rub what I already had. Third when you do the calcs it's not cheap - of course it's worry free taking it.

In the companies I've worked for they have never offered fuel cards to anyone - previously negotiated into base salary... If I were offered fuel card then that's different id probably get a Golf Bluemotion with fuel card run it everywhere hassle free and vastly cheaper

you can lease an a class for 109 pm plus vat
you can lease an slk 200 amg with leather for 219 plus vat

some company cars now have a 'trade up' so for example a neighbour who works at rbs has an e class diesel which costs 550 per month all in.

it is often now cheaper to have your own car and lease it rather than pay company car tax (depending on miles etc)
