you can lease an a class for 109 pm plus vat
you can lease an slk 200 amg with leather for 219 plus vat

some company cars now have a 'trade up' so for example a neighbour who works at rbs has an e class diesel which costs 550 per month all in.

it is often now cheaper to have your own car and lease it rather than pay company car tax (depending on miles etc)
Very valid.
Another plus for co car if your made redundant you hand the keys back no issue or ongoing cost without a job paying for it. Quite apt in the current environment.

People who have to take a company car because they do a lot of company miles should not be taxed on them
They won't if they don't use the car for personal use.

Nope, just an allowance. Bit of a joke really as I don't know of anywhere in my contract where it even says I have to provide a car for business use. Think the allowance is just an NI avoidance thing for my employers.

Working in Field sales role I get a company car (ie rep type role)

nothing special tho, at my level its a meganne, then managers get laguna, then 3 series then 5 series

dont really understnad why all the office based staff also get cars - seems stupid to me

old job gave us car allowance - meant i drove far better cars, but with my current comapny car I can have a weekend toy too

so pros and cons to it really - but it is pretty handy having a car to use and abuse and not really worry about

Being in the motor trade I get a company car. I did opt out for around 5 years or so. However I got fed up paying to run 2 cars (I need an estate car for my dogs and tbh it stinks to high heaven of damp golden retrievers so is nto something I want to drive in my work cloths. So in September last year I opted back in to the company car scheme. Currently running a new Astra GTC 2.0CDTi SRi, I dont mind paying a bit more for company car tax in order to run something nice, at the end of the day it still works out a whole lot cheaper than buying the thing (plus I have a tendancy to get bored with cars easily), the other plus side is when something breaks someone else is footing the bill.

When I was at Kwik fit most staff who weren't based in centres of any importance had a company car, but only because driving was part of the job.

Otherwise I have a friend in recruitment with a company car. He gets the train to work. The car is simply a perk.

I have a company car. The choice for something interesting was not there, it was 320d, Passat 1.6TDI Bluemotion, Golf 1.6TDI Bluemotion or a big heavy eco-Volvo thing. S40 I think.

I did ask if I could have an Octavia VRS TDI though, similar price to the Passat....

At our place there are two distinct ways of using the company vehicles:

Vans: The vans are all classed as pool vehicles I guess, all have a fuel card and no personal mileage is allowed, so there's no tax. Given that there is a van for every site operative (except trainees), if you wanted to there's nothing to stop anyone using the vans as their own personal vehicle at the weekend completely tax free and with free fuel, although I'm sure nobody would dream of doing something so illegal (I certainly never did for the 2 years I had a van!)

Cars: The cars are all allocated to a specific person, they are provided for personal use as well as business, and we have to pay for our own fuel up front, fill in a mileage claim form at the end of the month and we get 14p/mile back for our business mileage. Compared to the deal the site lads get for van use, it's st, and a big hit to the wallet. Some of the site lads who've been promoted and got nice shiny cars have asked for their old vans back 3 or 4 months down the line after realising they're noticeably worse off with the car (this is generally where their other half already has a car so they've no need for two)!

I would agree to a certin extent that if you have to do loads of business miles you shouldn't have to pay tax on it (I do around 35,000 a year and I resent the tax being so high, especially as I don't get any free fuel at all), however when you look at the figures, a tax-free company car with a fuel card and personal mileage allowed would be worth 000's per year and be seen as a massive benefit in kind by the HMRC

Company cars to everyone at our place, selling builder's hardware. There is no cash option, the type of car we get depends on how much you sell for them. We just have to put our own petrol in for the private miles, and fuel card when were on area.

42k miles p.a. in a role with national coverage for a logistics company. I get to choose from a narrow list, or take a car allowance. Well, there are rumours of further reduction in the scope of the list frown

I'm at supervisory level, no car, my boss is a Shift Manager, no car, his boss is a Factory Manager, VW Passat 2.0l TDI (170hp). I don't really know why he has one, as his business mileage is minimal, probably about 5000 miles PA. How much tax will he pay?

I have the choice 500 per month allowance or a car and fuel card. I'm office based technical manager and will do less than 5000 company per year. I have taken the car option as my fuel bill was hitting 300 per month (personal miles).

My sister looks after some of British Gas' IT servers (I think) and haa to be in various offices about the country and has an Alfa Giulietta company car. Has covered around 15k in 7 months in it.

I'm a few grades off company car level but I'm not entirely sure if that includes field work, however there is some visiting of other offices involved
