Assuming it's the same engine that goes in the E60 520d (177 bhp I think?) then it's pretty strong.

My brother has a 520d and it's on nearly 200k miles. Not had any engine issues but has recently starting having some DPF problems. But you could always remove that...

Either car in 5yrs and +50K miles is going to be worth coppers lower mile car worth a few hundred extra at best - but what are the chances that the extra 1000 for the 80K car has a fair chance of saving that money in repairs (Clutch, wheelbearings bushes etc.etc.) reasonable I'd say.

I have a similar dilemma - I bought a 2008 118d ES Edition (full BMW history) with 74k on it from auction a few months ago for 6700 - I do around 25k and wanted a decent sized economic car (it has stop/start) but after reading Babybmw forum I get the impression that these cars aren't always the most reliable with big mileage (especially the N47 engine which can have problems with the timing chain). I decided to take out a BMW warranty (something I have never done on a car) because the chance of a serious bill was too big - I know in 2 years/50k its not going to be worth much, but even if I bought a lower mileage car and added 50k I would still lose a lot. Hopefully the 30 road tax and lower full bills will make it worthwhile.....
