Oh yes, now that's a proper rally car!

Lots of coups being suggested, technically hatchbacks but I'd still class them as coups rather than hatches.

Renault 5 Turbo had the engine where the back seats should be. I think you are thinking of the GT turbo i.e. the one you would have seen down most high streets in the 80s and 90s, the Renault 5 Turbo is a rare beast.

Golf R32 and Audi S3 are rear wheel drive and come with the bonus of driven front wheels too. Ok I cheated.

Sorry to be pedantic, but strictly speaking it's the other way around as they have a haldex system which sends power to the rear wheels only when strictly needed when slippage is detected at the front wheels.

Pacers are RWD, and were intended to have a wankel. Absolutely rubbish even by contemporary US standards, so an obvious 300bhp/ton choice.

Isn't that new Aldi A1 Quattro rear-biased? I thought it was, due to the excessive pictures of it in EVO going sideways on the snow....

Could be wrong (usually am right though)

No, the Chevette HS was Jan 78 and the Lotus Sunbeam March 79.

The first hot hatch was the Renault 5 Alpine whose launch pre-dated the Golf GTI.

ARGUABLY, the Renault 16TX was the first "hottish hatch" with it's sports wheels and double headlamps in October 1973 though most would say it was still too soft in the handling department.

There are also 1975 claims on being a hot hatch by the standards of the time from the Scirocco Mk 1 and slightly later Fiat 128 3P.
