If we're digging through the history books, let's have what is usually credited as the first ever hatchback, the RWD Austin A40 (Farina) Cambridge
The A40 Farina was a different model to the Cambridge and featured a split tailgate like a Range Rover. However, Innocenti in Italy made a true hatchback version.Meanwhile the Pacer was never a sports car, not even with the 1978 V8. In fact the Gremlin had this V8 back in 1972 and similarly, was no hot hatch because cooking V8s were nothing unusual.

The list could be much longer too.
Now watch the OP add "...currently in production by a German manufacturer".

You wouldn't call a Porsche 928 a hatchback, would you?
What actually makes a car classify as a 'Hatchback' though?
I mean technically all those above have hatchbacks.....but I wouldn't consider them as such.

I've asked this before, even started a thread on it Nobody can it seems can write a set of rules to clearly define 'what is' and 'what isn't' a hatchback.
Some to consider:
MINI CS
Fiat 500 Abath
Alfa Brera

My dad tried to convince my mum it was a sort of hatchback in the 80s. My sister and I (about 4 and 7 at the time) even slept on the rear shelf a couple of times while they attended parties/whatever! Eventually he admitted maybe it wasn't really one and got a uR Quattro. Ace car but absolutely puke-tastic for kids in the back! You wouldn't call a Porsche 928 a hatchback, would you?
