In my view a hot hatch is a 2 door version of a small car also offered in 4 door form with the fastest engine available in the range at the respective time.
This is probably the most ridiculous definition of the term 'hot hatch' I have ever heard. For a start a 2 door car is a coupe not a hatch and a 4 door car is a saloon, so I will assume you mean 3 door or 5 door.

But you've just said that a Focus ST 5 door is not a hot hatch whereas a Kia Picanto 1.1 is a hot hatch (fastest in the range at the respective time...)

Regardless of its driven wheels, that car deserves to burn in hell for crimes against people's eyes.
Well I guess just not everyone is lucky enough to drive dull boring blobs of metal like your Audi and Golf. Bloody god job too really.

I think it should be pretty obvious that anyone deciding they need to purchase a hatchback will go out looking for something that's a practical family workhorse, seats 4 in comfort with easy access to the rear, a big boot with easily loading access, and , to sum it up, something that looks a bit like a golf.

Seriously, if someone decides they need a car that would be called a hatchback, they aren't going to consider everything that happens to have the rear window integrated into the bootlid, and come back with a Supra or Corvette or something. If someone goes out and buys a Corvette, it's not because they were looking for a hatchback, they were looking for a sportscar and just happened to choose one with a hatch. At least half a hatch. Same goes for the Mustang, 924, 944, 928, Excel and all the rest. They're all sportscars of different levels of commitment and success. They aren't family hacks.

Frankly all these coupes and sportscars popping up are just attempts to post something original that's technically but not practically within brief, or attempts to be argumentative.

I'd be hugely suprised if the OP expected to receive a Corvette as a reasonable response to the opening question. It's funny and clever, but it's not worth derailing the thread with an argument over its merits.

So by your definition only a family hack can be called a hatchback?. Or is a hatchback only a hatchback when a prospective purchaser goes looking to buy a hatchback and choses a car based only on that criteria?. scratchchin

OP asked for RWD hatchbacks and that's what he got. If you, him or anyone else doesn't want to accept the cars listed as hatchbacks, knock yourselves out.

Mercedes like to call this a Coupe.

I will never accept that as being anything other than a saloon, but I am happy to let them continue thinking it is. Try it. thumbup

In your dreams. All the hatches - the Mustang II and Fox are strictly 2 in the back with belts to match.
Know what, I had a 1989 Mustang hatchback for 7 years, regularly carried 3 in the back, but had no clue it should only have been 2. paperbag

So Mustang is out, but the Corvette stands. Hope it has seatbelts for two. hehe

Try what? Not getting into arguments with someone who disagrees with my opinion? You put forward those ridiculous submissions and then defended them to the death when someone opined that they aren't what the OP meant, so, after you.

This is basically because you have fallen into the trap of motoring journalists in the 80's or 90s referring to 3 and 5 doors when it is a f*****g hatch not a door. wink However, I will modify it to say "designed to be sporty and intended to be the performance derivative". Yes, it does mean the compromised and heavier 5 door ST and GTIs fall outside my definition because they then become a "family hot hatch".

Still, good to see you pull me up after the million bloody stupid suggestions we've had. rofl

Does a 1-series count as a hatch.....or just a small saloon?

I'd call the 1-series a hatchback.

The 3-series compact was a hatch too:

In my day it was an estate. For example, the Austin 1300 was a saloon

but this was the estate

Ultimately, the idea of a small sporty car is nothing new - Austin 1300GT, Alfasud Ti etc - it just happens people didn't want a hatch back then so they got a boot.

Is that a class you've made up on your own?

Leon Cupra R not a hot hatch then?

Don't start with that, how many estates are called a wagon/sports wagon or tourer/sports tourer etc. wink

Because it's 4WD not RWD.
Oh lord.

There's an RWD sierra, right?
Yes, but that's ^^ an Escort...

I've asked this before, even started a thread on it biggrin

Nobody can it seems can write a set of rules to clearly define 'what is' and 'what isn't' a hatchback.

Some to consider:

MINI CS
Fiat 500 Abath
Alfa Brera
it might have all ready been mentioned but dont coupes usualy have frameless windows on the doors?

Some do some don't.

Most have boots but some are hatchbacks.

Basically the short ugly ones are hatchbacks and the long pretty ones are coupes.

It's interesting ...... the OP perceives a 3-dr 1 series as a hatch presumably - is the rake of the rear glass a factor in classification i.e. the more vertical the rake the more likely to be regarded as a hatch?
The car below is remarkably similar dimension-wise, 3-doors, rear hatch

Could it be classified as a hatch or does it overlap a few 'classes' ?

100% hatch. My Mondeo was 100% a hatchback as well. It certainly wasn't a Saloon!
