I'm 6'2" and in the 172 as the steeringwheel doesn't adjust it's tight on my legs no matter what position the seat is in.

I've driven a few 182's and always wanted one the STandard model not the cup.
I found the brakes not strong enough
I found steering very good
I found gearchange a long throw and indirect or sloppy vs say the civic EP3 which I found excellent in this regard
Engine boomy and it needs to be spinning 5k revs before the power comes which is great when your on it and frankly for q hot hatch that's just what I want.

I would have bought one but for the steering wheel position.

Cambelt replacement costs are high
As others have said exhaust OEM is shocking quality so if your keeping it get a stainless steel exhaust manifold and system then keep it.

My 172 steering wheel has adjustment, I assume they all do. It unlocks from underneath.

Really?
I tested them at main dealers and the issue I pointed out to a few sales reps was the steering wheel jammed into my legs so not a long or even medium term proposition.

If it does then I missed out on one. Instead had a fiat coupe 20vturbo.

Wow that's poor dealer service. I moved mine down a bit a couple of weeks ago. I think it only moves up and down, not in and out. I'll check it out tomorrow.

I've had mine for 6 years and the only mechanical fault has been the engine temperature sensor packing in. Oh and the heater resistor pack. Have a look at my profile, and you can see detailed costs and such like for the last six years on the thing.

Mine is inferno orange and has the optional Recaro seats from the factory. Only 8 were made like this so I consider it pretty rare, even if it just an option that makes it so.

Oh and keep in mind if you want a Trophy a lot of folk have talked of having the expensive dampers reconditioned.

They are average brought one new in 2005, brakes are poor, pretty gutless but never had any reliability issues, sold it after a few months for Ducati 748.

There are definitely alternative damper set ups out there as well which are a bit cheaper and apparently do an equally good job.
PS: Just read your updated blog in your profile Rob. 7 grand on insurance!

That is correct. I just bought a 172 Cup as a stopgap runaround/track day car while my Elise is off the road. I am 6'3" and the wheel adjusts (rake only) and the drivers seat has height adjustment. I would agree the driving position isn't perfect but it is perfectly acceptable.

I'm enjoying it, but a bit spoiled by the Elise really - the Clio is good but not a patch on the Lotus.

Comments re. exhaust and shocks are spot on - mine only has 33k miles and I have had to put a new exhaust on it, my fault for not giving it a better look over, so definitely check that. Shocks and springs I also replaced, but from choice - shocks are only 45 each from Renault.

Cambelt change is cheaper on the Cup - no air con - and Renault have an offer on, they did mine for 399.

Brakes I changed for Brembo HC disks; DS2500 pads and Motul RBF fluid and did a day at Brands, no fade and great performance.

All in I'd say a great car, amazing for the money really - 3k ish should get you a good one, but it is still a hatchback ... wink

Well that was the dealer in Reading.
You lost out on a sale due to this.

The one I was going to get was Orange or inferno red.
Oh well doubt I'd have one now though.

Do people put super chargers and turbo chargers on them for some big power gains or just lumpy cams trumpet throttle bodies fully balance the engine to allow up to 10k revs without engine damage.

There are various variations on Cliosport.net that people have done including turbos, superchargers, ITBs and even an RWD conversion!

Do you know if anyone has been able to raise rev limit to 12k revs like a spoon engine - though they do 14k revs

I honestly don't.
I haven't read any specific build threads with revs raised so high, but there might be some out there.
Interesting thoughts though smile

There's a self-remap gizmo called RS tuner that can raise torque & BHP by 5-10%. The guys on that forum were mad for it a couple of years ago...
