RE: SOTW: Saab 900 Turbo
Discussion
A friend of my dad's had one of these as a company car in the late 80's. Ran it up to 100k in 3yrs, bought it from the lease company, and put another 80k on it without any significant problems. Still looked and drove like a 20,000 miler when he eventually parted with it. I went in it as a passenger a few times, and I remember it being quick, comfy and refined.
Great shed!
Great shed!
Shameless picture posting alert...
Here's my old one
Riggers can testify to what he thought of that particular car, having been a passenger in it a few times.
Wasn't shed money though, I spent thousands on it over the 7 years I owned it. Around 260bhp, 280lb/ft, LSD, Bilstein B6's etc by the time I'd finished. Lots of uber rare or desirable Abbott Racing parts on it too.
Supposedly it'll be back up for sale in a few months - probably on here. You'll need around four times the shed's value though...

SAAB sold off its museum pieces?
Really?
Don't let the facts get in the way of a story, then.
The museum and contents reopen on March 24th, and its future is secured.
To be fair to Dan (and PH as a whole), they did sell the museum.Really?

It's no longer owned by Saab Automobile AB is it?
It is owned by Saab Aerospace AB, Trollhattan council and the Wallenberg foundation.
It does re-open on the 24th.
Its future is partly secured (though there is talk of selling off some individual assets and exhibits to help with costs)
It's important to get the facts correct...

Great shed.
Here's the one I owned in Sydney for 2 and a bit years.
Went for a drive once with three mates who were in an Alfa 147 GTA, Scooby WRX and Alfa GTV V6. The Silver Bullet easily kept up
And I sold it for a profit to a SAAB nut in Tasmania!
I'll be looking out for Graeme's old car, above

The headlining on this car was re-done in Edinburgh 6 years ago and the wheels are from a 1996 9000 http://www.uksaabs.co.uk/UKS/viewtopic.php?f=1&...
Looks a good shed and a decent base for a project. Rust is what kills these cars (driveshaft tunnels, door bottoms, wheel arches, sides of the bonnet etc). As mentioned, one of the best things about them is that with the rear seats folded, the load area is completely flat, sling in an inflatable mattress and it's perfect for cheap touring

Great shed, they are starting to command strong prices now in top condition - see Citikars website, they usually have some lovely examples on.
This one looks plenty usable without having to be overly precious about it getting trashed, its a bit different to the norm and IMO exactly what a shed should be!

If you or anyone else is seriously interested in the car, then get in touch as I know the current owner and will be assisting with the sale. Here's the one I owned in Sydney for 2 and a bit years.

I presume this is the 16S Aero albeit slightly modified cosmetically in this case. I bought the very first one off the production line in Sweden in October 1984 as a LHD export car - they only came in black or silver then. Superb car - tons of room and fast. Kick it down to 4th on the motorway and it flew. It was not the turbo lag that was a problem, it was the tendency for the front wheels to lift off when accelerating from a standstill. Otherwise perfect. And the ignition key beside the gear shift between the seats. Loved it! Owned it for 17 years until I skidded into a wall and that was that. Still miss it.

However what it did have was a knurled knob under the bonnet which you could use to turn up the boost. Which he did. With predictable results......
I've got one of them (knurled knob) although I don't keep mine under the bonnet.Saab's of yore were very much over engineered. Solid cars that had A pillars so thick and strong they didn't need a roll cage to strengthen the roof. It's a shame they started to team up with other companies which caused their eventual demise.
I've always fancied one of these - I'd REALLY like a 99 Turbo but as they're hens teeth (and gold plated hens teeth at that) I'll maybe have to settle here...
Tho ideally I'd like one from a seller who has some idea of how to write an ad - means they might know which bits to keep filled with oil etc. etc. too

Ah, right at home outside the Paradise Club with Danny Kane - aka Leslie Grantham. Great shed imo
This series is what first got me into these cars as a young boy. I finally got myself one at the age of 20. It was quick, quirky, amazingly reliable with cool image and carted all my stuff to Uni and back with its huge luggage space. I still love the cars to this day. Assuming you get one that has been properly maintained (as with any car) then the only thing to watch out for is rust. I would have another one in a heartbeat and have never had anything fail (aside from rust) on any of the 7 or 8 examples that I have owned-all of which were north of 100k miles, most well the other side of that figure. In the community a 130k milers considered barely run in. There are not many modern motors with that kind of build integrity, as the TopGear boys touched on in their recent piece. bikemonster said:

I wonder if that's because the registration indicates it was quite probably originally first registered in South Wales. (Perhaps a previous owner was a member of Plaid Cymru?)
