RE: SOTW: Saab 900 Turbo

true but it is a 'performance' car so you should be able to drive it a little enthusiastically. It's a fine box in the N/A cars, I just think it's underspecified for the turbo...
Mine stated being loud in fifth and spread to all gears at around 135K, (I never drove hard) which i suppose isn't too bad...I sold it before it died.

Oh, definitely. It was only really designed with 100bhp or so in mind. Later post 91 boxes are better. Believe me, I drive enthusiastically! Problems start happening if you rush gearchanges, full bore starts in 1st, and putting significantly more than 180bhp through it IMHO... Of course my box may fail tomorrow, but it's had a good innings!Mine stated being loud in fifth and spread to all gears at around 135K, (I never drove hard) which i suppose isn't too bad...I sold it before it died.

If you halve the grand I think that would be nearer to its value, IMO
Unless you know something we don't there's too little info in the ad to come to a conclusion on that. If it is all solid underneath and the engine/box is in good health it's worth that all day long IMHO.Love these... only ever driven a turbo auto way back when, but still remember it feeling quick even with the auto 'box.
Great shed..!!
I know its not shed money, but, damn it looks good...

Managed nearly 200k from mine and it only died when an extra 75ish bhp was put through it. Have no doubt that it would have done another 100k without the extra power.1986 first of the 16 valves I think, that turbo is a t3 ,same as many chrysler of that era .
Many ,many more of them expired by crashing in the hands of the untrained masses and many more died of poor maintenance.
I like them ,just less than subarus,as I must work on my own crap.(lazy)

It's the Low Pressure Turbo version, seriously down on POWER!

gearbox myth is literally a myth........ 210k on mine on original box, my mate Nic has 268k on his - original box. It's al down to idiot drivers who have no mechanical sympathy whatsoever.
It is - of course - possible that the person who owned it before had no mechanical sympathy and broke it for the next owners benefit.
I have customers all over the world who have very high mileage cars with original gearboxes - only enthusiasts will have them rebuilt though - many are bought by people who don't understand the saab philosophy and then scrap them.
They are now much rarer than you think.

This is a stroll down memory lane, I had an '85 900 16S in black. It was like a two stroke motorbike, gutless until you hit the power band and by gum you were off like a stabbed rat. Yes it suffered from torque steer, but I've driven worse like Wifezilla's 9-5 Aero estate. The 900 was comfy, practical and fun. Gearbox bearings expired and I got rid of it and replaced it with a 9-5 Saloon and It was nowhere near as good as my 900. In hindsight should have fixed my 900

I'd like to think I'm someone who does have mechanical sympathy. But my first gearbox went at around 130k miles, when the car was only putting out around 150bhp (weack actuator). Bad luck I guess.
The next gearbox came out of a scrapper and lasted around 20kmiles with a good number of trackdays thrown in. I thought that wasn't a bad innings really - it had around 220hp at the time.
The current box is still going strong (according to the new owner) with 25k miles on it at 260hp/280lb.ft which I reckon proves that if you stick a good one in then it will last a long enough time. It does also have a Quaife LSD, strengthened diff plate and type 8 chains though. I've never launched the car in first, and always 'fed' the power in in second gear.
And Steve, expect a call about some Saab bits soon - I need stuff for my newly acquired 9000 Aero.
