Not for buying a car (I always get that to work!), but for driving into work rather than getting the train.

For 3 years I've been getting the train in, boring as it is, and miss driving. So I'm trying to justify how it wouldn't be that much more expensive to drive in, but it is!! Parking and petrol alone is about 1500 more than the train, and that is without increased consumables on the car.

gggrrrrr... really want to drive....

Sorry, pointless post, just frustrated at my lack of ability to get man maths to work for once. Back to the train I go...

Downsize car?

Or...

I tend to find that a return on the train for 1 person can be cheaper than driving, but 2 train tickets tend to make driving (with 2 in the car) cheaper.

Can you share a lift with a neighbour/colleague? That halves the variable car costs, eg petrol and tyres and could make the ManMaths, or even proper maths, work smile

Have you counted the coffee you get at the station? 3 x 300 days is 900 there.

And your morning paper. 300 x 1 = 1,200.

And the cost of dry cleaning commuter sweat off your suit every month. 12 x 15 = 1,380.

And the flowers you feel obliged to buy the OH after spending all the train journey staring at that hot young thing in the fitted shirt: 12 x 30 = 1,740.

There you go, taking the car is at least 240/yr cheaper.

I'd be adding in...

Cost of afterwork Friday beers because you can - 40 x 46 weeks - 1840

Cost of taxi every Friday because you've downed 40 of beer in a few hours, fallen asleep on the last train and overshot your station by an average of two stops - 20 x 46 Weeks 920

Soiling charge for puking in a taxi, let say every 4th time - 90 x 12 (rounded up to allow for Christmas party) - 1080

You've just saved another 3840

Yey...go you!

smile

A pair of Dr Marten shoes/boots will last 3 years, I find. That's 22 a year in total. There's money to be saved.

Why don't you have a little walk and park somewhere free. Should save a fair bit there.

Can I ask what car it is? Some cars are worth the extra money to drive, others aren't.

So you should have written "900 + 300 x 1 = 1200". Also, commas aren't any good any more since the french think they are decimal points. biggrin
