Back to the OP post, tell the truth in the advert, and when they come to see it whilst the auction is running and your conscience is clear.

You can't be responsible if the buyer is an idiot, and no one would expect you reduce the final price by a large amount just in case the end buyer is a moron.

Print off a simple receipt (Sold <car name, reg, year, model> to <buyer name> on <date>. Terms: Private sale, sold as seen. Signed <you> <them>), 2 copies, get them to sign both, you do the same, give them one, keep the other.

If they come back complaining, tell them it is a private sale, sold as seen, and they accepted those terms when they signed, and the law states all sales are Sold As Seen and close the door. Do not engage in any discussion what so ever.

If they try to go on and on and on just restate what I've said to say above. And again. And again if they go on, etc, etc.

If it escalates, go inside, call police, get video camera and video them through the windows so you can show the police when they arrive.

Not that that'll happen, very very rarely is there any problem.

It's a diesel shed that will carry the family and isn't prehistoric. That's at least 1000.

Re the advert - leave it alone. No-one believes that its not knackered anyway, and you've already done your "i'm not a mechanic" waiver. The buyers know it's an issue and will bid accordingly.

The truth is. The car is running well apart from an anti-pollution fault. I have had this checked using Peugeot Planet (there specialist software) and it came back as an EGR fault. No others listed. I have stated this.

I'm not worried about being physically threatened by anyone (I sometimes work with travellers, I know how to deal with it, and I'm not exactly small) I'm more worried about someone paying loads more than something is worth and me having to live with it.

That was what my thread was about. What have you done in that situation?

Apology accepted but to be perfectly honest your confession(s) should be heard by your potential ebay buyers. Perhaps it would be prudent to cancel your auction and re-list with 100% truth. Your conscience will be clear and your car WILL sell for more than 500 guaranteed. WIN - WIN
If you honestly think it will be helpful to anyone buying the car I will EDIT the listing to say the car has had the egr taken off. I will also show the garage report saying it's not a problem at the moment to anyone buying and explain it in person.

Will that be acceptable to you?
What anyone else thinks is irrelevant, pause for some rational thought and do what YOU think is the right thing to ease your own conscience. Good luck with your sale thumbup

amend the advert slghtly, be honest, get the buyer to sign a 'sold as seen' disclosure & you are covered.

if he/she doesnt like it once they have paid up & sign the disclaimer just tell them to fk off!!!

honesty is the best policy so be honest, take the money & you should have a clear conscience. no-one is forcing any potential buyer to make the bid or pay over their winning bid.

Not that it matters, but that error message is more likely to be a partly blocked DPF filter isnt it?

Not according to Peugeot Planet. I got an independent to run a code check on it, and it says EGR valve.

I've just read the advert back. And I'm not sure what to ammend, OK I took it off before taking propper advice, but once experts have taken a look I was told to leave alone...

Now I could bog the add down with an edit saying before taking to to the specialist I tried doing it myself and it cost me a kings randsome to sort out. But how does this help the buyer? They still have the written report after the fact...

just amend the point regarding the egr valve. leave the rest & get the purchaser to sign a disclaimer. once he has then its job done as far as you are concerned.

it becomes someone else's self-induced problem.

"Anti-pollutiuon" fault messages are pretty much standard equipment on 407's above 100k, it never has much effect on price. It would easily top 500 as a non-runner.

It's got nearly a year's MOT, some tax, is economical, has a fault and an Estate so ticks most of the boxes for ebay buyers.

Several things of note

1 - people who bid on eBay don't always show-up to buy - or show-up and haggle - or show-up and then don't buy!! So don't count all your chickens just yet! I always encourage people to come and see the car and if they offer me enough they get it - screw the auction, I'm not waiting for someone to ignore me after it's done - I deal with real people who kick real tyres...

2 - the Anti-Pollution warning is almost certainly not the EGR valve and is MUCH more likely to be the DPF system which is quite a bit more costly to fix (and from 1 April an MOT failure). This is a common thing with modern Pugs and a specialist knows how to frig it so it doesn't recur - if you catch my drift - it could also be one of 10 other things and the fault code is seldom even remotely useful for that.

3 - whilst your description of the car should be honest and fair, as a private seller you have no worries about comeback as a buyer has almost zero consumer protection from a private sale. They might not realise this but unless you sell them something which is clearly nothing like what you said it was (e.g. a bag of chips or a picture of an elephant) then you're clear once the money is clear - but it's worth making it CLEAR this is a private sale (as you talk about your business in the listing??)

4 - lastly, you really need to get a grip on car values - a 54 plate car is worth a LOT more than 500 even without tax or MOT. The miles shouldn't trouble a diesel (there are 406s with double that mileage on essentially the same hardware) and I'd be disappointed if you get less than 2K frankly (you've undersold the car quite a bit but even so)

GL!

p.s. have you had the belt/chain done? It's just it's due at 150K and if it's been done already that's a BIG plus (and if it's not - erm - it's not)

No reason why you should feel guilty. It's a case of buyer beware as you found out with the Megane.

I'd say he got a good deal at that. Everyone's a winner.
