Apparently so.

But then 90% of the population would take a 12 plate focus to park on their drive over a 10 year old 911 with the same price tag.

Hmm, but I've asked some people and they said "Don't put it on, put it on in a years time and show off the 12 plate"

Really don't know what to do! confused

Plus the plate cost me a bomb too, so I just don't want it on retention or something for a year because it will seem like a waste.
2 Things:
1: Upgrade your friends to people who aren't quite so image-obsessed and prone to showing off.
2: Do what you want with the cherished plate (it's not private really is it - as soon as you put it on a car it's public) and stop worrying about what others think.

How about changing the numbers on the back? So rather than "SLK 200" you could change it to "SLK £16k DEP, £350 x 48" and put the private plate on? That way people will know how much you've paid for it, and you still get to put on the (quite nice, it must be said) plate.

So you've got a brand new car, and a great (valuable) plate - put the plate on the car!

If you leave it as a 12 reg, some people might think it's not yours, just leased or on crippling finance. If it's got your plate on, you're showing everyone you are proud of your car AND your plate.

Just my 2p-worth...

Oh, and pics please! smile
I'm picking the car up in 2 weeks, I wanted red bengal leather as the interior so they had to manufacturer fit it in. So picks will be soon.

And It thought about leasing it, but the in the long run it will be more expensive. So I'm buying it out right.

Also bearing in mind I someone who is 20, so opinions may differ across the ages.

I am also 19.

Do you honestly think anyone will give a flying toss or be impressed that it's a 'Brand new Mercedes'?

The streets are littered with nice new cars, Mercs, Range Rovers, Audi's, BMW's... Therefore the fact that its a 'New car' is not something I notice if I'm honest unless it's something unusual, rare or a supercar.

No one seems to buy anything anymore so most people can walk into a prestige car dealership and drive out in a new car after handing over a few hundred quid and signing a bit of paper a few times, as a consequence 'brand new prestige cars' are everywhere.

To sum up, stop being so worried about impressing the neighbours, put your nice private plate on and simply enjoy your new car.

You remind me of this;

Whether you put the plate on or not, the casual observer will assume it's your parents' car. So stop worrying about it and put the plate on the car.

Why is this relevant to what number plate you have on your car?

We're not impressed or jealous, just do what you like and stop caring so much about what others think of you.

If this is the future of our country we are fked.

Flog the plate and spend the cash on something useful.

Please do wait 2 weeks, I shall deliver pics to you with the number plate on!

Besides, my number plate is currently on another vehicle therefore it'll take a couple of weeks for it to be transferred on.

I just don't get why you need to tell us your age at all.

If you can't make your own decisions regarding a fking number plate how the hell can you expect to get through life.

Do you run facebook polls to help you choose what to wear on a morning?

I'll be honest. When I was about 15, I was impressed by new registrations and when my father was well off enough to buy a top of the range new car back in the 70s, I was quite chuffed about it.

However, it was unusual back then. Now when I see a new registration, I think company car, must have got a bargain there or mug for depreciation.

Nowadays anyone seems to be able to afford a new car so it's no longer unusual or a showing-off thing. I'll go further and estimate that most of the population now have no idea what reg we're on or what they mean.

What?

I asked for opinions.

You do know opinions and decisions are two completely different things right?

I'm saddened to see how difficult life is getting in England: Imagine having to make decisions like this at the tender age of 19, it must be really awful. Can you sleep at night? Do you break out in a sweat thinking about what the neighbours could think? You poor chap.
You should move to Germany. I have a 2008 reg car, but due to the German plating system, it's not possible to tell at a glance how old the car is. But luckily, people have other problems here, like keeping their jobs, feeding the family and so on, so nobody (including myself), really gives a fcensoredk anyway...
