hi all , probably thousands of posts like this on here but, im 17 and looking for a car and i think iv looked into just about every car from a micra to a mercedes and the insurance is comin back at crazy amounts, but i was wondering if it would be more reasonable on a 4x4 or a pick up? any past experience or knowledge on the situation would be greatly appreciated , was looking at the likes of an old landrover, nissan navara or a caddy pickup etc, help greatly appreciated !!

I think even for personal use you seem to have to go to more specialist commercial insurers. My dad insures his Hilux with Gladiator I think. Might be worth giving them a call?

Van/Pick-up/4x4 = DREAM ON OP!

I'm 25 in June, and was quoted a "best price" of £1800 to insure a 2001 Corsa Combo 1700cc non-turbo diesel.

Hilux, 2 years ago, before price hikes, were rocking £2000+ for me at 23. (was offered a few cheap by the company I used to work for)

LRs - dear again, been there & tried that.

Hence why I've put my LR90 dreams on ice for a couple of years

"ring for a quote. Not avaliable online"

is insurance speak for:

"you're gonna get fked. No lube. No warm hands. Just bend over. Scream. And be prepared for a £5,000 hit"

Sorry.

Depends.

you're 17?

job? student?

parents?

Classic - most want you over 21. As they're getting wise on it.

BIL is 20, just passed. Cheapest car he's found to insure is a 1300cc VW Polo from 1987.

£400 to buy.

Fathers name, (professional driver) and him as named, for use at weekends, (father runs it monday to friday work)

Cheapest quote???

£800

A LR90, R reg, was £3000 for me at 17. It drops quickly as long as you build up some NCB, I think at 23 its about £300 or so, one of the cheaper cars to insure, less even than my 306.

Starting point, Confused.com and meerkats.com (you know the one)... Oh and the singing fat bloke.

From those 3, you can make a "Hotlist" of insurers who are vaguely reasonable.

Those who can insure a LR90 for £300 at 20 odd year old.. Share us your secret aye??

At 25 I'm seeing quotes of £1500-£2200, thats as a 3rd car, social only blah blah blah

As I say, use them as a starting point.

I'd also try: Direct Line, Admiral, and CIS. The first 2 are good for me at this age, and CIS were a god-send when I was younger

Well, 2k a year just for insurance is pretty dumb if you ask me , think the point of these rises are to do with companies not wanting you to drive and at the end if the day by the time you add servicing, fixing stuff , petrol , tax , parking fines your well into 5k a year . Question is , is it really worth it ?

If my car insurance doesn't go down to 600 this year , I think I'll have to go without , but that's only because I have access to two other vehicles for emergencies if needed

No secret - just done a quick quote using direct line.

23 years old, 5 years NCB, 10,000 miles per year, £4000 LR90 (1998 300tdi), car kept on drive in good postcode. One parent as a second driver. £680.

Give a few more quotes and an hour or so fiddling I bet I could get it to less than £500, maybe even lower.

Perhaps just me they don't like then, as my quotes were treble that

The NFU have been good for my car and house contents and they do specialise in 4x4's. Whether or they will insure a young tear away remains to be seen. They certainly don't like motorbikes hehe.
